Anyone bought it? Can post some pics?
Hi, My sony cybershot dsc-u60 arrived this morning via FedEx. I love it. My first test shots are linked below, although I will be adding more tonight. These test shots are limited as I was just in my front yard in my pajamas and in a hurry. I already have a ton to upload later on, so you can check my gallery page again later as well:
http://www.wehavea.com/gallery/081-090.html

It's great. You can turn off the beeper so that you can take stealth photos. It's good on batteries; the alkaline ones (that they don't recommend) lasted more than half a day w/ lots of flash and lcd use. I just put my rechargeables in and we'll see how long they last.

It's small which is great. When I try to take a pic w/ my left hand I find it's ergonomics terrible. Not sure how a leftie would deal w/ this camera. But for a rightie it's great.

It's startup time is amazing, and I'm very impressed w/ how quickly I can take a second shot. It writes to my 128mb memory stick really fast.

The lcd is small but bright.

It's skewed angle will take some getting used to. I'm used to holding cameras straight in order to take pictures. This one you have to hold crooked (which FEELS more natural, but it messes w/ my mind). You want the screen to be lined up w/ the subject, not the body of the camera. (The screen is skewed from the body of the camera). Here's a picture of the back of the camera so you can see what I mean:

I love that it remembers what setting I left the flash on, etc. every time I turn it on.

This camera is awesome. Once I've had it for a few days I'm sure I'll have more to say about it. I'll either post here or on my blog: http://www.WeHaveA.com

Here is a link to few mictures of and with the camera. I'm sure I'll have more soon, did not have much time yet.

I bought the LCS-PHB case with it which fits nice and also came with a neck strap, whcih is what I have shown on the camera vs the blue rubber wrist strap whcih came with it.

I really like it as well, need to find some water to jump into to field test it. It is a big adjustment from shooting with my 717 (which I still have, this is just a second camera).
  • The LCD is really small but general works too frame it, although I wish I could hit a button that does not do anything in record mode to turn off display data.
  • Also the menu system/button layout is nothing like the 717 and other sony's I have used. I guess I just miss the 5way button. Still I wish in review mode it did not take 6 buttons to delete a photo; same goes for the self timer but I won't use that too much.
  • no tripod mount but not big problem
  • same goes for lens cover, I may find some way to better protect it (adapt case or make cover?)
  • index mode is really really small.
  • It does not float but they woudl have had to make it bigger to do so. If I'm concerned about dropping it I could just attach floating key chain thing.
  • no EV adjustment so have to be creative like pointing off center to meter and then re-framing.
Don't take above comments above the wrong way, I'm happy with the purchase, I'm just spoiled with 717 and adjusting to this one. I also have Clie NX60 with wifi card so maybe when I'm traveling I can have a photo album that updates in route (believe it or not I have a small ftp app for Clie). To make things easier I coudl re-build pages and then drop in photos as I go along.

One thing I find nice is that I left it without batteries overnight while charging them and it had correct date/time when I started it up, I guess there is an internal watch battery or something. Still I would not leave without battery for days on end as may drain down the internal battery if it does not re-charge via the aaa.

Thanks for the info, nice pictures!

How is the lens protected in this camera? Is there an automatic lens-cover?

And if so, would anybody mind uploading a picture of the camera with the lens closed?
Thanks!

Last question: The stills you both have posted look surprisingly good!

I'd LOVE to see a few video examples too - I know that this camera has only the small "video mail" mpeg mode, but I'd heard that the quality is improved from the older cybershot cameras.

Can somebody put up a few movies? Thanks in advance!

I am considering getting this camera as a fun party cam together with my Nikon 5700 and I am quite satisfyed to see the pictures you've showed but I haven't figured out how small the camera really is?

Could you please take a picture of the camera in your hand or in any other way show how small it is? The camera hasn't arrived in Denmark yet, so I can't just go to the nearest photo shop to see it.

The whole oval where the lense and flash are, is covered w/ a piece of clear plastic. There is no other cover, and there is no way to close the lens.

I have not tried the video mode, but if/when I do I'll post something. This camera does not have sound, though.

Good idea, I'll take a photo of it in my hand, and next to some of my other cameras. I'll upload them tonight, as I'm on my way out the door now.

Hi, I have added a 3rd batch of shots from the dsc-u60 to my gallery page, including some comparison shots comparing the physical size of the dsc-u60 to my Canon D60 digital slr, and showing the dsc-u60 held in the hand.

Yes, exactly what I wanted to see - thank you!

I love a bargain! The LCS-PHB camera case and neckstrap for the dsc-u60 is $25 at sonystyle.com, but today I went to RitzCamera and found a perfect case and perfect neck strap for $16 combined (strap was $10, case was $6). Photos of case and strap, plus more dsc-u60 shots have been added to my gallery page: http://www.wehavea.com/gallery/081-090.html

re. Video: I am not real happy w/ the video, but that's ok because I don't plan on using it. It only lets you take 15 seconds of video, regardless of how much memory and battery life you have left. Also, no sound. I have compared the video it takes to that of my $60 Aiptek Mini Pencam ( http://www.aiptek.com/products/digital/mini.htm ) and my $99 Aiptek Pocket DVII digital video camera ( http://www.aiptek.com/products/digital/dv2.htm ), and the video of the dsc-u60 is by far the more inferior of the three. It's output is smaller and the colors are less brilliant than the other cameras. I'll put a sample online, but I'm not sure if I'm going to put a sample from my Aiptek Mini Pencam; even though the output is better (good for comparing) the files sizes are huge and I'm not in the mood to deal w/ converting, etc.

Anyway, here is some video from the dsc-u60 and the Aiptek Pocket DVII:

Interesting comparison,, thanks very much for posting these video clips. That's exactly what I was looking for,, cheers!

Hi, I use a program called Breeze Browser to generate the image pages for my gallery.

The purple navigation pages in my gallery (the menu pages) are done by hand by myself... but the white gallery pages are generated by Breeze Browser.

You can download it from here:
http://breezesys.com/
There is a free trial, and to buy it is cheap and WELL worth it.

It's a wonderful program. You can browse folders of images and it generates thumbnails on the fly for viewing, you can sort photos, view photos, generate web page galleries, etc.

It also does BATCH RENAME which I just love, and it allows for extensive customization (info in the help file) in batch renaming.

You can select images to add to a web page and tell it what size, what color page, or create your own template. I took an existing black template which showed EXIF data, and a white template w/ drop shadow and no EXIF data and created a custom template (the white pages w/ drop shadowed images plus EXIF data). It's a kick- ss program.

Hope this helps!

Lauren :)
Shortcut to my gallery:
http://www.wehavea.com/pix
The pictures in your gallery are ease to see on monitor and with a
small
size.
Even when I see in full size at 800x600 the result is very good.
What are the steps you do to get there?
