I have a good fanny pack for F717 but it's too big to carry on a backpacking outing and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a minimal size pouch/bag for F717. I want to attach it to either shoulder straps or waist belts on a backpack and have my hands free to use trekking poles most of the time. It just has to hold a F717 and nothing else. Anyone has any ideas?

Thanks,
Zany

Sony's LCS-FX is small and can be attached to a belt.

Thanks, Steven. It looked promising but I don't think it has a belt loop to attach to a backpack. At least I didn't see anything about that. What I want is to be able to attach it to either built-in shoulder straps or waist belt of a backpack when I backpack into the wilderness. It comes with its own shoulder straps which doesn't help me because I don't want things to be dangling from my neck.

It does have a belt loop, Zany. I've got mine in my hands
and just measured the loop. It will accomodate up to a
2" belt/strap. You don't have to attach the included strap
to the case if you don't intend to use it.

I have one and it does have a belt loop on the back. A nice one that will accomodate an over 2 inch belt.

If you go to ebay, you can get for $40 less than the Sony price. Make sure you don't get an imitation. The ones that sell the actual Sony bag use the Sony part number ( LCS-FX) in their description. I got mine from the seller in Silver Springs, Maryland. She has 100% positive feedback, and she had it to me in two days from the end of the auction.

thats my lowepro bag, you can either wear it using the shoulder strap or you can put it on your waist using a belt... plus comes with a weather proof bag built in, perfect when you are passing under a water fall or something :)
I strap a Lowepro Orion Mini to my pack which is probably bigger
that what you are looking for, but they have a big selection of
smaller bags - http://www.lowepro.com/pages/byStyle/digital.htm

I use it for day hikes. Has a belt loop and detachable shoulder strap.
Holds 717, folding rubber hood, A/V cable, extra batt, MS, and a filter.

Thanks, Usurp. That seems to fit my need. I think I might look into even a smaller model Prisma 200AW. Only difference is the height and it seems to be big enough for DSC-F717. I need all the weight/volume savings I can get on a backpacking trip.

Only thing I don't like about it is maybe the depth of 4 in. Compared to Prisma300AW of 2.75 in. It has less room for other stuff but when you're backpacking you really have to watch every ounce. Thanks.

It is a bit bulky, but I've got a WA lens, filters, 2 extra batteries, case of MS's, pad and pen, lenspen, lens tissue & cleaning fluid, so I use every bit of available space. I either hook it thru the hip belt (which might not work for you since you use trekking poles) or thru a cinch strap I have looped thru one of my shoulder straps. If I'm just using a day pack, I wear it as a fanny pack.

One of those that either usurp or R2D2 recommended might be better for you if you just have a camera. All Lowepro's I've seen have good padding and are well made so I don't see how you can go wrong with any of them.

the Prisma 200 wont fit the 717. as you can see in my pics, i have the Prisma 300 which is 7.25inches and it fits the 717 nicely. the Prisma 200 is 7 inches wide which is exact size of the 717. this means u will be stretch the bag a bit to get the camera in.

so only get the prisma 200 is u actually get to try it at a shop and check ityourself. other then that i would advise u to get the Prisma 300.

I use M-Rock-The Glacier Bay and it works pretty
good. Good quality and offers good protection.
You can also do some research on their bags.

I am planning on carrying F717, an extra battery, a filter, and a pocket tripod. I will probably put F717 and a filter into a waist/shoulder bag and put the rest into my backpack. I like to have as little as possible on my shoulder/waist. The other stuff would ne nice to have but gotta learn to say NO on a backpacking trip. :-) Maybe a lenspen.. :-)

Hmm... that would be hard to do because I haven't seen those in local camera stores. I might have to go with 300 then.... Anyway, thanks for all you advice, Usurp.

Thanks for the info, numusician. Still, Prisma300AW is more compact. Better suited for a backpacking trip. I know it's smaller but I just have to learn to not carry everything. :-)

From my thread,

Usurp recommended LowePro Prism300 bag. It looks promising for me because I can loop it through my backpack's waist belt. And I think it's just big enough for the camera and thus minimal volume/size and weight.
