D750 back button focus?

No need to bite sd40...... I only joined the thread later. Anyone who reads the manual can indeed find that the AF-AE, Fn and preview button can be programmed for quite similar functions.

Have you tried using the Fn button during shooting especially for a much used function like AF.....

You have to push it with like to right hand ring finger, and then try to push the release button to shoot with your index finger. Really not handy - for me.

The problem with this is that muscle memory for people who like I have had D300, D700, D8xx, or Dx confuses us.

Also when you remap on the non-pro bodies you lose the half depress focus option so you've locked down your camera's focus option to button only. Hand the camera over to a friend/stranger-novice to jump in a picture and better be prepared for some OOF shots!

"Today's Pictures Are Tomorrow's Memories"
After you old-timers die out, those of us who never owned a D300, D700, D8xx, or Dx will still have to deal with the question of the best way to assign the buttons.

Truth is, I bought my first DSLR in 2005 and have a few years at this myself. But I arrived at the D750 from from cameras like the D5000, hence am not "confused" by memories of reaching for the AF-ON button.

I join you in wishing that Nikon would add one, if only to put an end to the constant kvetching.

This solution sounds interesting, but wouldn't the shutter button substitute a new exposure when you go to take the picture? I must be missing something.

If you half press and hold with C1 set to on, exposure will stay locked as long as you hold the shutter at half press. The meter will not reacquire exposure until the shutter button is released.

You can do it in the D600 a consumer body, so I assume you can do it in the D750.

Thanks. Never tried that.

Ralfwolf that sounds interesting.

So that would accomplish about the nomal situation:

1) you focus (AF/AE button reformatted) with AF-ON and hold focus (or the cam refocuses all the time if in AF-C)

<-> normal situation is you focus and hold focus with the release button half-press + you also take exposure but if you reframe your cam will re-exposure. Exposure isn't locked

2) then you expose and lock exposure with the release button half-press, either on the focus subject or else in the frame

<-> normal situation you will have exposed at shutter release half press but you can lock that exposure via the AE-lock button.

One question: when focusing via the AF-ON button on a pro-cam or via the reprogrammed AF/AE Lock button, is it correct that the camera is only focusing at that time, not taking exposure?

Can anybody tell me if you can set trap focus on D750 & D810 like you can on D300 & D700.

I am interested to find out as I find this very handy at times.
Trap focus works on D750. Yes, I did test it.

During my research, I found some references to older version of firmware on D810 where it didn't work which has been fixed in current versions but I can't speak from direct experience.
