What's the benefit of registering your Nikon products? I bought mine from B&H and Adorama in the US.

For US warranty work registering with Nikon is meaningless as Nikon requires you to include your purchase invoice when sending in for warranty repair to prove when you purchased the lens/camera, and that you are the original owner. Makes sense as if a camera went out of warranty and all you needed was the online registration to get warranty service, then all you would need to do would be to register the camera the day it broke and get free warranty service. Nikon isn't that dumb. The Nikon online registering is great for keeping tack of all your equipment serial numbers in one single place. Say your house burns down and you lost your home saved list, now you have a list in the Cloud available to you.

I think if you register lens you get an extended warranty.

you still need to send in the US warranty card and a copy of the sales invoice to have warranty/extended warranty service. Most of the online registration is just marketing survey hype...........

Not exactly. When I've bought Tamron 15-30, there was a requirement to register lens. When I registered it, I've received e-mail confirmation about my 6 years warranty.

Registering doesn't really do anything except provide Nikon with your email address so you can get bombarded with Nikon stuff. (news,classes,sales....)

I use it for a place to store serial# and dates purchased (easy access)

Yes :)

Yes I do.

There is little benefit though. It provides a place to keep serial numbers, which was convenient for Nikon Capture software.

It is not needed in any way to get warranty service, including extended warranty service.

I did a few years ago, and then Nikon changed something and all my data was gone.

As for extended warranty, they'd like you to think that registering has something to do with that, but it's really just for marketing. The 5-year lens warranty (in the US) will be applied whether you registered the lens or not. (And I was told that by Nikon, when I sent in a problem lens about 3 days before the 1 year mark. Representative said not to worry, 5 year warranty regardless.)

Never. So far I've never needed warranty, there's no legal requirement to register to maintain your rights to warranty, I store all my serial numbers in a backed up Excel file, and not registering gives one less company my personal information for someone to hack.

I register my Nikon products because it is a good depositary for the serial numbers of my stuff in case I need it. Actually I could once present it as an evidence my stuff wasn´t new for a custom officer. It was accepted and I had no problems.

Regards,

Oh well, I just pulled all my receipts and invoices and just to make sure, I registered the remaining items. Can't hurt. I should be good until 2017-18.

It is nice to know that there are no legal requirements in order to obtain the extended warranty. I am good to my gear, although the D600 is showing wear and tear from handling. Specifically, I have some shiny corners on the bottom of the body and a nice worn spot were my fingers curl into the grip. On the lenses, the gold paint covering the lettering is starting to come off. Nothing major... :-)

Depending I will buy the SquareTrade extended warrantee from B&H. It is a full replacement warrantee something no manufacture offers. If you do not make a claim and cancel the warrantee before it expires for any reason SquareTrade will prorate a refund back to you.

The only reason I buy a warrantee is if I can say to myself I can not afford to replace this item Day 2 if something happens the manufacture does not cover like impact damage.

It is not so easy to save $1k plus or more only to have to pay for it anyway later.

As I upgrade that product I will cancel the warrantee and use the refund to help pay for the next camera body for example.

Yes..

"Do you register your Nikon cameras and lenses?"

I prefer that it is slightly "confidence-building issue" when you are selling your camera-body or lens and if you can prove that item is registered to your name.

The other way round, when you are negotiating with somebody and when he or she told the serial number of item, at least here in Finland the national dealer can confirm that the owner of the serial number and the name of the web-seller are matching.

I have couple of pre-owned items, purchased from shop but also from local web-forums. It is not two or three cases when seller disappeared just the same second when you ask serial number. The amount of obvious cheaters at buying and selling webpages is amazing and one tool against their tricks is this registration. It’s not bulletproof but much better than nothing.

Yes, not sure of any benefit.

It's interesting to hear everybody's comments. The forum has always been helpful :)

If you buy a stolen lens then register it with Nikon online, if the person of the stolen lens notified Nikon, then yes that victim's police dept. will be give the name and address of the person registering the stolen lens. If you are trying to find out if the lens that you are buying before you buy it is stolen Nikon will not tell you if it is, or not, even if the lens is stolen.

In Germany when you buy at a dealer and let him register it for you, you get a 3 Year warranty.

I registered mine for one stop access to serial numbers. I opted out of most of the mailings and get very little Nikon email.

it was also nice for insurance purposes to provide list with complete name and serial number of each body and lens.
