Phil Ashkey is monitoring...

He does set the rules.. :)
That is indeed true, and it's also up to Phil to determine how and when to enforce them. I can't speak for Phil, but if it were me I'd be a lot more concerned with self appointed deputies running around making not so veiled threats against other users in my name than I would be with the occasional off-topic post. But thats just me :)

I agree with Jarrell to the point that i have always looked to this forum as a means of learning more about Nikon cameras and how to get the most out of them. Yes before I decided to take the leap to the 5700 I did a LOT of reading. I read all the reviews I could, I read all the threads on it and potential problems and potential uses. But in my mind there is only one reason for me to have a camera. That is to be able to take the very best pictures that I can. To me I would never buy a camera without seeing the finished product, the photo. Plus the photos here have allowed me to understand how a macro shot can look and how to do it. How to creatively shoot hummers. Some things you can read but others you just have to see. And the various shots have really helpped me to open up my horizons on possibilities.

Somehow posting pictures may not be allowed in every forum anymore
except "Samples & Galleries" forum...
Granted that people who just post pics to show off their dogs/cats/cars/etc. should do so in the "Samples & Galleries" forum, it only makes sense to do so.

But it should be allowed to post a VERY minimal number of pics on here, for the purpose of discussing technique... any one agree with this? Question is, will Phill also agree with this?

Something that's been referred to in some of the above responses concerns something I don't know how to do. Hate to admit it, but with my CP 995 and PS 5.0 how do I get the exif data and post it with a pic?????? I believe the subject of this thread has been throroughly covered and would just say that maybe we should be more alert, but not be too concerned, unless Phil speaks to us directly. Photography is about photos and it's obvious who draws the responses on this forum....people who make excellent photographs and have lots of good information to share. More power to them. Joan

LOL

I love all this little bickering, makes me laugh. Let's all put up
pictures in the Samples gallery and just take over. Maybe we'll
take over the whole darn site. Why not? We need a director of
Nikon Homeland Security--Phil Youngblood? A President--Jarrell.
Vice President--M.E. Parker. Court Jester--me.
ROFL

I have been known to pack a piece at times. But then again, I have a tendency to go way goofy. Maybe we could alternate weeks.
Seriously, it wouldn't kill me to check two forums every day
instead of one. Again, let's just all post in the Samples gallery
this weekend and just take over.
That's an idea. If posting pics is a problem, though no mention has been made in this forum, I see nothing wrong with a direct link. Lots of folks do that anyway. I tend to not post many pics here because of reading the guidelines when I first found this forum. So far, seems much ado about nothing. :)

Into every group, a little posting cop must fall. It must be a law of the 'net because the little busy bodies are everywhere. We've been pretty lucky here -- until today. :)

Thanks, I needed that laugh... :)

How to Post Pictures Here!
Getting prepared

For tips on how to post your photos on pbsase.com...

It's "in topic" - how boring. Anyway, when I use my 995 (or any other Nikon Coolpix) and use my card reader to get the pix into the computer, the exif data is always with each picture. When I add them to pbase, the exif data goes with them. In pbase, under each photo is a little info, and one of the items is exif data (hide). So I guess you can hide it if you want to, but I leave it alone. The people that go to the forum gallery can see all the exif data. I do forget that many don't do that, so I'm trying to at least put the name of the camera I used in the name of the message or in the text, and other data if it is pertinent to why I posted the photo.

Nuff said. I'm with Jarrell, Doug and others - Phil is the boss; I don't think he meant the NTF, so if no one had posted a Canon message in our forum all this discussion would be kaput. Let's "kaput" it.

Thanks Muriel, I went to pbase and still didn't see it. Went into their help section and found that PS doesn't provide it when posted to pbase unless it is PS6 or more. Mine's 5...so that's the problem. At least I'm a little smarter than I was ;-) Joan

I'm not a 'thread starter' but I just had an idea that might help. It seems that the main problem Phil Askey is trying to solve is that if too many off topic threads and random pictures get posted, all threads including the ones that are more relevant to the forum get pushed off the first screen too fast. A possible solution would be for someone to start a thread (or two) each morning, (i.e. 'Friday's NTF Fun Posts') where people can post anything. If people would use that thread instead of creating their own, posts would stay on the first page longer making the forum more user friendly.

I think posts like 'Show us your favorite animal' improve the forum because they provide a single thread for people to post fun pictures and everybody knows what they're going to get when they open it. Hence the idea for the daily thread.

Just a thought,

and what about threads where the author post 5 or 6 pictures then...

everyone replying fails to remove the picture links from their respective replies..and so on.

It's Phil's forum and even if you have made a donation, he has the final say!

If you don't like it http://www.dpreview.biz is still available!

How do you intend to deal with this "War on Errorism"?

Come on, PY, all eyes are on you!

To all of those who I offend, please forgive me.

Since not everyone around the world is on the same day of the week and it is undetermined how quickly a thread will 'fill up', it would probably be better just to name the thread 'NTF fun posts 1'. When that one gets to a hundred, someone could start 'NTF fun posts 2'.

War? There is no war, simply obfuscation by the opposition. This is merely a police action, nothing more. All we will demand -- erm, ask for (cough, cough) -- is a sniffer on every 'net connection, a live cam in every bathroom, and ownership of the mind/body/soul of your first born. Then we can clean up this little misunderstanding re: errorism in no time flat. Oh, yeah! I forgot to mention that couple billion for my personal account. I'll need that for odds and ends.

Phil

OK. I understand the sentiment that it's Phil's house and his ballgame and his ball and he owns everything so we do it his way or hit the highway.

But this reminds me of raising a kid. At first he does things all your way. "Because I'm the Mom, that's why!" works. Parents rule.

But then things begin to change. The kid starts to get his own ideas. He wants to paint the walls black, or he wants (gasp) to share a pic with the group. There is inevitable friction. Ultimately one of two things will happen. Either kid goes away and doesn't come back, or a new relationship develops based on mutual respect.

Now, what has happened here is that these forums have developed into online communities which don't entirely toe the line with respect to how Phil wants the rules to reign. Some people agree with Phil because they don't like someone expressing themselves against the rules. They prefer to live within rigid guidelines. Other people don't share the faith.

So, one of two things is going to happen. Either Phil begins to realize the forums have developed beyond his original vision and allows this to happen and nurtures it along, or he exerts his right as a dictator to rule as he sees fit, executing those who violate his dictates, purging the threats to his regime, and generally surrounding himself with sycophants who think and believe just like he does. The result is predictable. A vast wasteland of technobabble will proliferate; those who prefer more freedom will drift elsewhere, and dpforum.com will disappear from the List of Favorites of thousands.

Nah, that just sounds too ominous. You're right though, maintaining a group of forums can sometimes seem a lot like raising a brood of kids. I think much of the success of these forums is in a large part due to Phil's masterful parenting skills :) In this instance things boiled over to such a point in a particular forum that people began to whine and complain to the point that he was forced to step away from more important tasks and crack the whip. At the end of the day, common sense will prevail and things will continue much as they have been as long as we kids make a reasonable effort to behave ourselves.
