Phil Ashkey is monitoring...

Last week I was having problems with Nero

and I posted here, the PC Tools, and Storage and Media. I got lots of help here, one or two replies in PC Tools, and I got ignored in Storage and Media. The Nikon family is much more helpful.

BUT! That's not to say that we can't branch out, a little "hostile" takeover! Let's all go and post a few pics in Samples and list the camera as a 5700. That'd be interesting going "head to head" with the other people. What an interesting experiment.

Here's your task, everyone post at least one pic this weekend in Samples and see what happens--it doesn't have to be a new pic. I bet we get more people coming to the Nikon forum to see what's going on with the 5700s, 4500s, etc.

or anyone else who is lucky enough to make the step to a dslr.
So what can we talk about? Nikon digital prosumer cameras not DSLR?
How about accessories for our cameras? Are they considered Nikon
Talk if they they are not Nikon products. I am assuming anything
that has to do with picture processing, photoshop settings, Qimage,
or other software related photographic equipment is not appropriate.

LOL

I love all this little bickering, makes me laugh. Let's all put up pictures in the Samples gallery and just take over. Maybe we'll take over the whole darn site. Why not? We need a director of Nikon Homeland Security--Phil Youngblood? A President--Jarrell. Vice President--M.E. Parker. Court Jester--me.

Seriously, it wouldn't kill me to check two forums every day instead of one. Again, let's just all post in the Samples gallery this weekend and just take over.

I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to occasionally posting off-topic memarks in these forums, but I'm glad Phil is going to crack down on off-topic posts.

We need to keep these forums as helpful/user-friendly as possible ... and that's not easy when people are posting anything and everything in the forums without even thinking about which forum they are using.

First of all, I agree completely, it's Phil's site - he decides what's appropriate and what's not.

I think that from time to time there are posts that simply don't belong here (some of them don't belong anywhere). I also think posts of pictures by people who otherwise contribute nothing to this forum do not belong here. You know the ones, the "look what I can do pictures" with no explanation, no comments, and from people whose only posts are those kinds of pictures (a particular young lady comes to mind; certainly she's very talented, but this is not the place for her work, in my opinion).

All that being said, the posts that I most look forward to, the ones that inspire me most, are pictures from Jarrell, M.E. and a few others. I see these incredible pictures, and I say "Wow - my camera can do that?!!" Now, the answer, of course, is that my camera can't - their 5700s can do lots of things that my 5700 cannot. But thanks to their posts and explanations, my 5700 is growing more capable all the time. I've learned a lot from a lot of people here, but I think I've learned more from Jarrell's pictures and explanations and diagrams than from any other source.

I don't know exactly what Phil wants to allow and what he wants to eliminate. In fact, if I were in charge, I don't know how I'd write a set of rules that specifies what I want to allow and what I want to eliminate (but of course, I instantly know it when I see it!). However, I hope the excellent, inspriational posts (with discussions and explanations) from Jarrell, M.E. and the like never stop.

Just my "off-topic" opinon,

Rodney
interesting.
First and foremost, it's Mr. Askeys place and he can make any rule
he likes.
Anything else I add is just my opinion and that's not going to
change a thing.
My doctor has been on my case about spending too much time at the
computer and not getting enough exercise (shoulda never told him),
so maybe this is a blessing in disguise.... :)
Anyway, tcsee thanks for the heads up!

I dont think posting a self promoting "what a nice guy I am" pic
of what you did the day before is appropiate for the Retouch forum.
The Pic had nothing to do with retouching. No matter how compleling
ppl thought that pic was.. it should of been posted on Samples and
Galleries. Poster said it was a mistake. But History check on him
showed he posts the same pics on Nikon forum and Retouch forum.

I know one thing. I owned a Union Concrete Company in NYC for 18 yrs. Ive had smoke blown in my face by the toughest and best..You are a powder puff. How could you spend time with a old woman then run all the way home to post her pic all over the net.. Even in a Retouching Channel..My friend the new rules are no more posting like that or you will be banned..Case Closed. Phil owns this site.

The NTF can afford samples from their members because it is quite slow compare to other forums.

But try to keep it to originals with EXIF (or what improvement were made and how) and indicate what COOLPIX you are using. Some of you know each other very well and use the forum as a playground throwing pictures at each other. But remember always assume when you post a picture that someone who doesn't know you or what camera you are using might be reading your post... and be a bit more selective when you pick a picture to post... ;-)

give you a lot of time to think something over, kinda like mowing the lawn. Oh! before I get into that, did you ever notice how well you can sing when you're using a power mower?
Back to the subject Jarrell!

I've already said in this thread about how this is Mr. Askeys website and he can set any rule he likes. If we don't like it we're free to move on. That's life.

The question about off subject posts and posting photos here has come up so many times in the 3 years I've been here that I've lost count. The majority of users have always said they didn't mind these, as long as it didn't get out of hand and "Pic" or "OT" was in the subject line. Now, a lawer would say how much is too much, how much is "out of hand".
Don't everybody turn around and look at me... I surely don't know.

It's always been my personal opinion that it would be a boring place without these types of threads. I cannot imagine logging on and seeing nothing but questions on what you think of the 5700 or how do you set X camera to do so n so. Questions that have been asked scores of time before. Don't take me the wrong way, there is nothing wrong with that type question, it's what the forum is basically about. But, I've always felt it didn't hurt to have them sprinkled into the mix, and the mix is what makes the place interesting. Or, if you want to look at it the other way, have "some" (where is that lawyer when you need him?) OT and photo posts sprinkled into the questions on Nikon cameras.

Perhaps I've misunderstood the purpose of NTF all this time. I need to reread the rules, I guess. I thought it was for the discussion on Nikon cameras, accessories and usage. Does accessories mean Vivitar flash units? Does usage mean the software used to process the photos? Do you not post a picture demonstrating what can be done with X camera and X software.

Little do your realize that when I'm out shooting and sometimes I see a certain subject, I think about someone here did a photo of something similar and came at it from this angle and how good I thought it was, so I try to emulate it. I don't remember what I had for dinner last night, but I remember an outstanding picture I saw here a year a go.

Maybe a great forum is like a great cake. You've got to have the right mix of ingredients for it to taste good. The question is what is the right mix for NTF?

Someone else in this thread said that evidently Phil didn't have a problem here at NTF, if he did he'd already have been here. That sounds reasonable to me. I was paraphrasing without looking back, so I hope I got it right.

Anyway the hardwood floors are waiting for me and there is a vacuum cleaner around here with my name on it.
Ya'll be good!

As far as I'm concerned, the cake is superb, but Phil's the head chef, and maybe hel prefers vanilla over chocolate. Or maybe we're unnecessarily alarmed by his comments which were made in the context of the Canon SLR forum. If anyone knows Phil well enough to get clarification, it would help put an end to a lot of speculation and agita.

As usual, I'm in complete agreement with both Jarrell and Frank (saves me time in writing). It's Phil's Forum, and he has every right to conduct it the way he wants. He must be doing a good job, too, judging by the success of this site.

The right mix is important. We all might have differing opinions on the reipe, but Phil has the final word. OK by me.
