Lots of dusts in a brand new Zeiss?

I had dust in my 55 zeiss and I think I asked the same question Haha. Bought it grey so thought it was refurbished or fake.

Actually I think it was metal dust. Only visible with torch. My non zeiss sony did not have this problem new.

I found one other thread on some random forum about it and after posting someone said the same thing.

I think the 55 has poor cleanliness control.

So I think they will all have this problem. didn't bother returning. I think qc is less than a real zeiss. Touits have a card with checkboxes and clean elements is a criteria

I wonder what would happen if one goes to a Sony retailer and inspect all their lenses in stock with a torch prior to purchase. I am suspecting that this is perhaps surprisingly common?

Do you guys shine a torch into the lens before/when the purchase?

How many of you have the 55mm 1.8 Zeiss? I wonder if you did check for internal dust at the point of purchase. And if you didn't, I'd be very interested to hear what you find out now with the help of a torch :)

(actually, doesn't need to be the 55mm 1.8 Zeiss, could be any prime really, or zoom for a comparison)
Lenses are manufactured in the conditions preventing the dust. Here is the shot of the inside of mine FF55

There may be some dust, but I couldn't see it. Now, keep in mind that:

1) I bought this lens used for about $650

2) I used for about 4 months in any kind of conditions

3) I can use it for another 6 months and still get my money back

Let me just ask you one question: if they show you this lens and the dust inside BEFORE you bought it, would you still give them over $1000 for it? Now you still have a chance to back out from a bad deal. But, that's mine $0.02 and it's your money after all.

I would return it as soon as possible. That is a lot of dust for a new lens, not to mention its a very expensive new lens.

CalBoy, how are you able to have the aperture wide open when off the camera? My new FE 35/1.4 lens closes down when unmounted (even when ring is set at 1.4) making it difficult to see the inside condition. Thanks

I'd like to know as well. What I do is mount the lens on the camera, power on, max aperture, torch in. Didn't know there's a mechanical work around.

Update: found the answer

Update, I found out that "blue_skies" posted a reply explaining how to keep the aperture blades open when the lens is detached from the camera: simply power on, max aperture, take off the lens while the power is on. The blades will stay at that same setting.

After I checked my lens with this method, I found out that the dust inside is actually way worse than I thought. There are so many of them, it almost looks like they are part of some sort of coating?

So are you going to return or is it too late now as 24h may have passed?

Hi Angrymagpie,

luxury is exactly this: one pays up more, and generally much more, for better, sometimes not that much better but in any case, rather exclusive.

If I pay over $1k for a lens, I expect it to be perfect. The most expensive lens I bought was a Nikon 85mm f1.4 for a little over $1.5k and it did not have dust inside and if it had had dust inside, I would have returned it!

What is more or less acceptable from an 18-55mm kit lens costing a couple hundred dollars, is not acceptable from a luxury lens.

I know that dusts inside lenses are more common than one usually thinks, and that as far as I know, they have almost zero impact on the image quality.

But it still leaves me with a bizarre feeling finding out about it. Having just forked out $1000+ on a brand new unopened Zeiss, I did not think this would be a problem. But there you go!

Don't think I should return it though.. What are your thoughts?

I agree. I'd return it to that store and purchase elsewhere and I would tell them exactly why they don't deserve my business anymore. I really dislike chinzy policies like that. That's not customer service; that's them servicing themselves to your money.

I agree with your sentiment McKool.

Unfortunately many people (myself included) don't live in a country with decent consumer law. From what I understand, the store policy is considered as a standard practice here (Indonesia). I am as unhappy about as you are, if not more. The problem is all the stores are going to tell me the same thing anyway.

can't be a new lens .. someone must have been using it before or its a refurb job ... send it back

I finally got an update from the Sony store. They claimed that the dust must have gotten into the lens after I unboxed it. Because of this, they are only willing to replace it once. And if the new replacement has the same problem, I will need to send it to the service centre for cleaning.

All and all, it's BS in the highest order. But it is what it is.

when the replacement arrives, remember to start taking a video of the unboxing, and check immediately for internal dust spots while recording.

LOL, that is a good one. Looks like you got yourself a Hoover vacuum cleaner, not a lens. Joking aside though, I feel your pain. Seems to me, you got less protection there buying from legit store, than getting same lens used on eBay, FM forum or even local CL. Hope the replacement will be to your satisfaction and soon we can see some fine shots you took with it!

Totally unacceptable...its a dust moisture resistent non zooming 1000$+ zeiss...it'd have 0 speck in it...dusts inside the lens pis.se me off...espescially if its a brand new lens... And believe me they affect photos, in night shots, when you're close to a.light source...you'll have some annoying flares comes from these dust.
