Lightning shot

Nice - my Dad is from PEI, it's a beautiful place but I haven't been up there since they built the bridge. Enjoyed the shots in your gallery from the Island.

Wow, that's amazing. I wish I had the kind of reflexes necessary
for that shot!
You reallt don't need reflexes you just have to be lucky and patient. It was a pitch black night so just took a series of exposures set at 8 seconds and hoped that something would happen with in the time period. Never fails that as soon as your timed exposure is up lightning strikes and you miss it, happened to me a bunch of times that night.
Thanks for the positive comments.

I know exactly how you feel. I call it hunting the elusive lightning as it is hit or miss. It's fun never the less.

If interested, you can see a few of mine here.

That's a pretty good shot. Every time I've tried it nothing, absolutely nothing, just the lights from the houses opposite. There are storms forcast for the next two days, I'm gonna try again, and again, stick the widest lens on that I've got and then get nothing, absolutely nothing!
Perhaps you could pass on some hints.

It is hit or miss. My ratio on hit vs miss is about 1-10% of the shots have something. It may not even be a good something. I have the Canon S45 and go to full manual mode. I like to have ~ 5-6 sec shutter with f8 stop. Usually use cloudy WB and infinite focus.

I find that lightning usually travels in somewhat pairs. IE the first glint of light may then spark another bolt. I could be wrong though, it just a feeling I have right now.

So I have the best results of hitting shutter as soon as see any kind of flash. Once I tried the invalmeter (sic) which automatically took a pic every minute. I had a lot more misses but there was no intervention on my part. Just set it and forget it. :^)

Some of my "trophies" from my "hunting" adventures can be found here.

I've had a look at your gallery and you look to have it sussed. I'll have a go tomorrow night if I'm back in time. I'll use a Fuji S2 with a Nikkor 24-85 lens, polariser? ISO 200 f/8 set the shutter for an 8 second exposure and press it when I see the first flash. I know if it's going to be a good storm the dogs get restless.
