Hello all, is there any top of the top, complete video course or book on photoshop for photographers? I have obviously researched on-line, watched many videos, have a book of scott kelby. It would love something more advanced, really get into a total magic....

thank you for suggestions

As a Lightroom user, I have been looking for a Photoshop course, also. Because Photoshop is so huge, even for photographers, all the courses seem to have different focuses. What I have done is to focus on a few areas and buy those videos (mostly from Udemy, on sale). Areas such as selections, masks and layers. For very little money, this is not difficult to do.

I started the same process of looking some 8 months or so ago and this is what I've found:

I have the book, The Missing Manual Photoshop CC by Snider that has been pretty good and understandable.

There are lots of free stuff. Here are some of the ones that have really helped me and have been more detailed and thorough than most: B&H photo Webinars - There are quite a few and are excellent and VERY detailed. Search out Julianne Kost, Tim Grey, Scott kelby, Andy Graber, Jeff Cable and Ben Willmore. Some of these Webinars are several hours long.

Anthony Morganti has a few good starter videos.

Phlearn has lots of short videos on assorted subjects but they often fly along too fast for beginners.

Photoshop essential.com have some good tutorials.

For me the most useful complete photoshop tutorial was the Photoshop One-on-One series at Lynda.com.

There are 4 sets of videos with each set being about 10 hours long. The 4 sets are..

1) Fundamentals

2) Intermediate

3) Advanced

4) Mastery

What I liked about this course is how comprehensively it covered topics. Say the 'clone tool' - we all know quite a bit about, perhaps you think you know everything but in a tutorial over an hour long you are bound to learn some new stuff. There is a 45 minute tutorial on the 'shake reduction' tool, an hour on using the pen etc..

From what I remember you can join Lynda.com on a monthly basis.

I would suggest Martin Evening and his Adobe Photoshop CC for Photographers and, or his Lightroom book. His books are thorough, accurate and fully explain. They are my constant reference sources.

+1. You'll get great information from an actual working pro photographer, I think a big step in the right direction from NAPP which I feels dumbs down their 'education' too far.

Free video's, I'd look into anything from Julieann Kost of Adobe.

Some very good and not expensive video's over on Luminous Landscape.

Thank you, guys for all suggestions. I will start with Lynda. I understand that for the latest iteration of Photoshop, there is no Master yet available?

I will check into this as well. Any insights on how his book is different from Kelby?

IMHO, Kelby is fast food, quick and dirty 'education' and he's not what I consider a professional photographer. Martin's book is very complete and he's not going to gloss over something Kelby would and does (soft proofing comes to mind). If you want a fast food, here's everything you need to know in 7 steps (and a step is anything he wants to define as such), he's your man. If you want to understand the hows and why's, he's not, Martin most certainly is. And Martin really IS a Pro photographer and a very good one.

I would like to recommend Peter Eastways series of instructional video's.
Haven't seen the video's but I know Peter and used to get his beautiful magazine (Better Photoshop Techniques). The guy is very, very good!

I know you have asked for advice on video courses and books and i agree with the recommendations, especiall Martin Evening's books and Julianne Kost's courses on line. But have you considered going on an actual course with a tutor? I have been using PS since version 4 and since then have learned using all the methods mentioned. But the most i have learned has been from attending courses. At these, you can get to know your tutor and classmates and interact with them the whole time and I think this is the best way I have found to learn. Martin Evenings' books are great but it is difficult to sometimes find what you wish to know, and you have no one to ask. No feedback. I have been on courses from a day to a week and have always brought something back from them. just a thought you might consider. I don't know where you live but i am in the UK and have done courses here and in the US, including one with Julianne Kost who is a great teacher and lovely person with a wicked sense of humor!
Interesting post, Jules, what can you recommend (or where to look) in the UK? Dave

I have been on courses run by Epson, more to do with getting the final print as you want it but tied to hoe to prepare it in PS.

Also a lot of photographers run courses. It is some time since i have done one but I'm sure if you Google will be able to source some. I went on one with Damien Lovegrove but I'm not sure if he still does them. Adobe themselves do courses.

I must admit, aftyer Googling a bit myself, that there don't seem to be that many around nowadays. Maybe everybody does do them online now.

The SWPP do them, keep an eye on their site for updates.

I hope that helps a bit. I really enjoyed doing 'live' classes. But the last three have been in the US.
