Hi there,

I've got a problem with Windows 8.1 not recognizing my 5D III properly. In the device manager "Canon Digital Camera" has this yellow warning sign and code:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There are no compatible drivers for this device.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? I want to calibrate my lenses with Focal..

Thanks a lot,
Christoph

Did you install the Canon Software from the disc that shipped with your camera?

Canon models use a PTP Protocol to communicate with the Operating System for transferring images, etc., and the EOS Utility Software on the disc that shipped with it is needed before Windows will be able to communicate with the camera (if you install everything on the disc, the EOS Utility Software will also be installed)..

You can download the latest EOS Utility 2.4 Updater from Canon's web site from the downloads section for your camera model here if you want an even newer version of it, or the version you installed is not working correctly with Win 8.1

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consu...lr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_iii#DriversAndSoftware

Pick Windows 8.1(x64) from the drop down list of Operating Systems, then expand the "Software" section and you'll see it (EOS Utility 2.4 Updater)

Expand the EOS Utility Updater entry (use the + key), and you'll see this description for it:

"EOS Utility is an application that brings together all of the functions required to communicate with the camera. Functions for downloading and displaying images, remote shooting, and camera control of each setting when an EOS DIGITAL camera is connecte..."

But, note that you'll need to install the version of the software from the disc that shipped with your camera before that updater will work to get the latest 2.4 release of it.

So, you really need to locate the disc that shopped with your camera for starters if you haven't already installed it, and install the software from that disc (which will include the EOS Utility software that is needed before Windows will transfer photos from it). . Then, you can update it to the latest version (if needed if the old version isn't working correctly with Win 8.1) using the EOS Utility Updater that you can download, as mentioned above.

For some reason, Canon never posts the full version of the EOS Utility software online (only a utility that can update it to a newer release if it's already installed from the disc that shipped with the camera), and Windows and third party software tools both rely on it being installed for communicating with newer Canon models.

Hi,

But EOS Utility 3.1.0b for Windows is available on the drivers site you linked, and I've installed it (you need to provide a product code).

However, it does not recognize anything and I have the windows problem that I described.. so I'm not sure what the problem is. Tried various versions of this MS Camera Codec pack but for the one that actually worked it said that this is already installed.

No idea what to do :(

My bad.. I missed it. I didn't realize Canon was doing that now (posting the full version of the EOS Utility Software online).

Have you tried different USB Ports (front panel versus computer back panel, USB 2.0 versus USB 3.0? I'd try different ports for starters (and make sure you're not going through a USB Hub of some time (for example, ports built into to a display), and are plugging it in directly to a ports build into the computer instead.

Cable look OK?

That type of error does imply a software issue versus hardware issue though. Very strange.

If you can't figure out a solution, you may want to try uninstalling the Canon EOS Utility Software you downloaded (using Windows "add/remove programs")

Then install all software available from the disc that shipped with your camera (in case something else on that disc is needed),

Then, run the EOS Updater utility I mentioned in my first post (but only if the version on the disc that shipped with the camera is not working properly after you go through those steps)

Tried all this already :( Different USB cables and ports, reinstalling, etc.. did not help... No idea what could be wrong

I dunno..

Did you uninstall the software using windows add/remove programs before reinstalling?

Unfortunately, sometimes registry entries are left over that way that can confuse the OS and software later.

There may be a way to search for them and remove them using one of the popular tools like CCleaner (but, be careful as you can do more harm than good in some cases, and I'd make sure to let it make a backup copy of the registry before changing anything).

Or, if you happen to have a good backup you can restore from just before trying to install any Canon software, you may want to consider restoring it', then start over with the Canon software from scratch.

Did you try to tell Device Manager to search your local disk for any drivers when you saw that error?

How to do that here (expand the how to install drivers yourself section)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/all-drivers

I'd let it search your local drives for any applicable drivers, and let it search the Canon disc that shipped with your camera, too.

You may want to try deleting any entry for your camera in device manager, too (then reboot and see if it finds what it needs for it to work).
