>STF Challenge - Opinions Please<

I disagree, eligible gallery should be restricted to Sony cameras. However, I feel that theblue has a point and the challenge format should be updated. I think that anonymous posting would go long way to help ensure fairness in voting.

I echo Harry's well stated sentiments and would add the following:

I learn a lot from the eligible gallery about what I can expect my
Sony camera to do technically. I learn to "see" from entries in
both the eligible and exhibition galleries.

I think the exhibition gallery allows anyone to show their work,
with any camera from any time, and join in the fun. The STF
challenges are richer for that. Still, people come to STF because
of Sony cameras and I think the difference between eligible and
exhibition galleries is appropriate.

My 2 cents,

Michael

From my experience participating in past STF Challenges, I have
observed that STF'ers photographs are judged by fellow STF'ers
based primarily on photographic merit. This is good.

I've made other observations that photographic merit is not
camera-brand specific. Do you agree with me so far?

Here's my angle... rather than limiting "eligible" category
photographs to Sony cameras only, lets permit all STF visitors to
participate in the "eligible" category regardless of the brand of
camera that is used?

I would suggest that all photographs keep with the theme of the
specific challenges, that the "eligible" category be open to anyone
using any camera during the challenge period, and that the
"exhibition" category be open to anyone, using any camera, with
pictures taken at any time.

What are your thoughts on letting any STF'er with any brand of
camera participate in the "eligible" category?

If the majority of people here think that this is a good idea, I
would suggest that the rules be modified, starting with the next
Challenge.

To make things easier, I suggest stating whether you "agree" or
"disagree" or "still thinking about it" or "no opinion" in the
subject line of your replies.

Here's my vote... "agree" :)

One of this things I noticed most was people asking how certain Sony cams performed taking certain pictures (low-light for example). It easy to direct them to the stfchallenge link.

Also, the competition was origianlly set up for Sony only cameras. There were some entries from other cameras, but as a whole the group decided to keep it Sony only. Which IMO it should stay...

I would much rather have anonymous entries, so that the images would stand on their own merits. I also like the idea of a different way of voting.

------
it needs to be taken a step further.
Anonymous posting and stricter voting would go along way to making
these challengers fair to everyone.
The Fuji setup is the best but requires a lot more work to set up
and regulate.
The canon challenge has made an attempt to making voting fairer but
unfortunately its system is full of holes even though at first
glance it seems ok.
I just think we need to take a stronger look at the way the
challenge is run.

I'm at work and, I have not had the time to read through all the posts but....

FWIW, here's my observation of what you are asking...

You forget one VERY important point, that this IS a SONY talk forum.
That is why we have one gallery dedicated to Sony cams.

It is my view that our opening the Exhibition galleries to OTHER digicams is really a courtesy granted by STF members since this IS a Sony talk forum challenge.

Have a nice day and, thank you for expressing your opinion / ideas.

From the beginning the STF challenge was designed to get Sony camera users out using their cameras for a specific topic and it's simply for fun. I personally have learned so much about what my 707/717 can do from the challenges. I have only participated in a couple but I almost always go look to see what these creative folks have come up with this time. I feel we have enough participation just from Sony users and adding other cameras into the eligable category would overly complicate matters. Once again the challenges are for fun and from what I have seen of some of the other forums I am not sure I want the bitterness flowing into STF. We have a great group of people here and I know when I ask for feedback on a photo it's judged on the photos merit not the camera I used. I agree if someone wants to host a challenge in a non-camera specific forum thats wonderful but the STF challenge should remain only Sony.

Being a newbie, the STF Challenge is more than just fun, it is a place where I can go to learn about the camera's performance. I can see what can be achieved with cameras that I own and am interested in. Where as I do appreciate phtography as an art from all types of cameras; as a learning tool a really don't care what kinds of pictures other camera's can make. Not trying to be rude, just trying to say that it makes sense that the challenge would be more inspirational to Sony owners as a "Sony Exlusive Competition." I assume there are other vehicals of competition out there where photographic artists can compete against each other in a more open format. The STF Challenge is a great place for Sony owners of all interest levels (novice like me to ledgends like Shay) to share their work and compete in the same venue. It is a rare chance for a novice like me to feel comfortable sharing my comparitivly mediocre work among the masters. Even though the forum is open to all it feels like the STF is a tight-knit group with only and handful of users that like to flame others work and equipment, unlike many other venues.

In short if the challenge isn't broke (which it isn't) don't fix it.
