I'm about 99% sure that my D600 can't control my SB-700 with the pop up flash. My guess is the radio ability is broken. I'm not sure how much THAT would cost to fix - or if it's worth my time sending it away to be repaired since I'm sure it takes forever. (If anyone has had that repaired and can tell me what it cost - then maybe I'll try that option. Otherwise....)

I haven't tried it yet - but wondered..... if I got a second SB-700 and put it on my camera and set to master - would it be able to radio the other flash? Or does the radio signal have to come from the body in order to get TTL?

Just trying to figure out options that might be cheaper than buying a new body....

and i obviously have no idea of the hardware mechanics of the CLS system - so educate me. :)

Unless you really want another Speedlight, or new body, the cheapest solution is a Yongnuo YN - 622N Flash controller (or similar) mounted on the hotshoe.

Forgive me if you are well up on the system, but your question suggests that you are not ...

... are you sure that the settings both in the camera menu and on the SB700 menu are set up correctly to get the on-board flash to work as a commander for an off-board SB700? It would be a shame to spend money on something else if not having set the right menu options is the problem.

When you try this, you do have the flash on the camera popped up, yes?

Also be certain you have the latest firmware update. I know there was an issue with rem9ote flash on the D800 that was corrected with firmware update. Perhaps there was a similar one for the D600, Also be sure your camera and flash are set properly... NIKON has some good videos on the tube showing how. I use my D800, SB-700 and SB600 all together.

The pop-up flash on your D600 should be set to 'Commander' mode - I don't have a D600 but you will find this setting under the Flash menu.

Your SB-700 needs the power switch / mode selector to be set to the 'Remote' position.

As another poster has mentioned, the Creative Lighting System isn't radio-controlled, it's light-controlled. The downside of this is that it might not work in bright sunlight, so if you are trying it in those conditions (perhaps to fill in for a backlit shot) it might not work.

It also won't work if the SB-700 can't 'see' the pop-up flash. You need line-of-sight between the units.

You are correct in that I'm not exactly up on how Nikon's CLS system works. I came from Olympus where the flash was radio controlled so I incorrectly assumed it was the same.

That said - I can get my SB 700 to work with my Nikon D7000 just not the D600. Exact same settings, flash up, etc.... I even tried a friends SB 700 and had her check my settings. It is indeed something weird with my camera.

Thanks!

I decided to go with this option. A friend had those triggers so I was able to test them out to make sure they'd control my Sb700 - and it was super easy. Thanks again!
