Samsung 50-200 OIS III/NX1 lens issue with OIS in video mode

Does anyone have this combo, the NX1 and the latest 50-200 OIS III lens?

What I'm finding is that the OIS works fine in photo mode, but as soon as you go into video standby, the OIS disengages. This also occurs if you go immediately into video record by pressing the record button.

You can clearly see the OIS working in photo mode, but as soon as you try to shoot a video, it's disengaging.

I haven't seen this behavior with any other zoom lens on my NX1. It's a shame because the lens is otherwise very sharp.

Further testing reveals that the OIS does not shut off in video mode, but its effectiveness is greatly reduced.

I can see why I didn't think it was functioning in that the difference as soon as you press video standby or begin a video, is dramatic.

Yet switching OIS off, further increases the shake. If this is a properly functioning lens, the OIS is very ineffective for hand-held video (in either of the OIS modes). A tripod would be an absolute necessity.

I can't see why it has this behavior, given that's the OIS appears quite effective outside of video mode. Really bizarre.

There is OIS in video mode. It is not adequate. Worst I have ever seen. There is clearly something wrong.

Yes Mark, as I reported in my 2nd post, there is 'some' OIS going on in video mode but it's probably 20% (if that much) as you see in photo mode.

Samsung really needs to fix this. I'm not sure if it's this version of the lens itself (version III) or how it interfaces with the NX1.

Really disappointing!

Yup, given it is real sharp. It has to be some kind of glitch (Panasonic corrected the OIS with firmware updates in the notorious 100-300mm lens - so maybe this can be fixed).

The III is for the lens version.

The III is for the lens version.
Correct. We both have version III and have the same problem with OIS in video. OIS works in still mode ok, so there is OIS.

I have this lens with my nx300 and it seems the ois works the same in video mode as it does in still mode.

I couldn't tell a difference at all.

Which makes me believe there's some compatibility issue between the NX1 & 50-200 OIS III lens. I would think this can be addressed in a firmware update. I'm assuming you have the version III iteration of this lens?

In its current state, with the OIS as it is, it's a useless lens for hand-held video with the NX1.

Yes, I have version III. Hopefully a firmware update can fix the issue you guys are seeing.

I have the same problem! The stabilisation seems to be not working in video mode. I bought the NX1 with the 50-200 OIS III last week. Pictures are great, video is really bad with all the vibrations.

What now? Is there a standard approach to adress issues to Samsung?

Welcome to the club! There are three people who report this problem now. Call Samsung tech support. Insist on this being a defect in all NX1-lens combinations - you know of three people having the exact same problem. Do not accept "Send in yopur lens/camera for repair" Insist on higher level tech support if you do not get a good answer. They will build a data base of complaints at the very least. This clearly requires an update, and other lenses have received updates specifically to make them work with the NX1.

Absolutely horrible OIS with still photos with the NX20. Being used to Canon IS lenses, I was shocked to see how useless the 50-200 IS was. I don't think it gave me any benefit over steady hand holding without IS. Also, image quality wise, the Samsung is the worst telezoom lens I have ever tried. And I've been pretty happy with just about every other NX lens, except my copy of the 20/2.8.

Actually I've found the lens to be quite sharp, but when the OIS isn't working, it can give the impression of a poorly resolved lens.

As Mark said, we all need to call Samsung, report this issue and build the database to make them are this is a real issue. I did this yesterday. It should be fixable with a firmware update.

Hi,

Is it substantially different performance of OIS in 50-200mm as compared to 18-55mm? I was considering buying that but stopped after these posts...

btw I have nx200

OIS works great for pictures and video on my nx300 OP is reporting that for video on his NX1 OIS is limited.

Arn, I think you should send your lens to Samsung to have it checked/serviced. I use a 50-200 OIS lll lens on both NX20 and NX30 and print my photos 40x60 cm with nice quality. I remember at least two tests of 50-200 lenses by German photo magazines and the Samsung always had been among the best lenses tested. I had a 50-200 OIS ll lens that fell 1.5 m and at first it seemed that it survived the fall, the pictures not great but useable (I did not make large prints then). When I received an OIS lll lens as part of a set package, the 50-200 OIS lll was vastly superior and I knew that I had to send the OIS ll lens to service. When I received it back the stabilization worked great and and the sharpness was fine, cannot find a difference to the new 50-200 OIS lll lens.

That said, I do think the OIS on the 18-55 OIS III is better on my NX300 if your firmware is new enough to have the improvements they made (lens and body firmware) than the OIS on the 50-200 OIS III. It's good on the 50-200, but I can take a sharp photo with a freaking 2 second exposure at 55mm with the 18-55's OIS, I'm pretty steady though, I wouldn't expect that result for everyone. With the crop factor a 1/80 exposure would be rule of thumb sharp for 55mm, that's a little over 7 stops away. That's not a measure of the OIS though, since for that I would need to measure between where I can keep it sharp with and without OIS rather than against the rule of thumb.

I called Samsung today. They have created a helpdesk for me. I was promised that they call me back within 5 working days to discuss/solve the problem.

For stills, I'm really happy with this lens in combination with the NX1. Also, the autofocus speed is impressive!
