I have a lexar 1GB 32x card for my 10D and I am having a problem. After I download my pictures from the card (using Lexar's Jumpshot cable) and then put the card back into the 10D and after formatting the card inside the camera the 10D shows around 200 shots left capasity when it should show 409 in low compression largest jpg setting. However, when I clear the 10D settings (not custom settings) the card once again reads 409 shots left. Its cumbersome to reset all my custom camera settings in order to get the max space on my card. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks.

I have the same camera and CF card. I would take your camera into Canon and have them check it out. I have the card that doesn't work with the Nikons, but it works great in my 10D.

I just figured out what my problem was after reading my Canon 10D manual (hardly possible :-). The manual says directly that depending on what ISO setting I have the 10D set at the "shots left" screen may show a differenct number on a empty card. So I put this to the test. I took several shot on a blank card and then emptied the card and set my ISO to 100 and sure enough it said 409 images left on the black card. Then I set the ISO to 1600 and sure enough it read something like 356 shots left even though I have not yet taken any photos yet. Just changing the ISO affected the shots left display. When I went back to ISO 100 the shots display screen showed 409 again. I guess I am still learning a great deal about digital photography and learned that it does pay to carefully read everything in the manual.

Andrew

That makes sense, more ISO = more noise = relatively less JPEG compression possible. Good spot.

And have occasionally received seen '209 shots left' with an empty card after format. It does not bother me as I know the camera will fill the card to capacity and not give a 'full' message with unused space. Just know how many shots you took, and you'll always be pretty confident about how many more you can take.

Goto menu an check your bracket settings it should be at zero. If AE bracket is used it will reduce your capacity since each shot taken the camera will store one for +, - and 0.

I have the same thing time after time. After the first shot 10D recalcualtes the number of images and gives you the right number.

This is normal, since JPEG compression ratios depend heavily on the detail of the images. Repeated detail, noise, ISO, aperature, shutter speed will greatly affect the file size.
