I'm thinking I'd like to have a good, but less obtrusive camera to use for everyday occasions where I don't want to be running around with all my DSLR gear... couple of photos while at lunch with a friend, etc. I would like it to be good enough that if I happen across a great shot I'm not kicking myself after because I didn't have my DSLR with me. I want to get the best quality I can, but yes I'm poor so my budget would be under $500 the lower the better. I also like to take night shots, so fairly decent in low light would be a plus.

I know there are many excellent small digital cameras available nowadays, so I figured I'd start by getting feedback to narrow down the options.

The Sony RX100 would be the best choice for you. With it's 1" sensor, it's more than decent in low light.

That looks like a really great camera! RAW files is a great plus as well. I'm thinking it would be a hard one to beat...

Looking at the RX100 line, I see the II has a tilting screen. I'm wondering if it would be worth the extra $100 or not. That is one problem I do have with cameras sans viewfinder, seeing the screen in bright light. Many of my shots with my old P&S were taken blind, press the shutter and hope for the best!

Any good tips for dealing with the sun glare issues?

A manual lens in a digital world, and not sure whether I love it or hate it.
The RX100 II has a better sensor than the RX100 I, and a tilting screen can be interesting in certain conditions and an EVF can be bought as an option.

I'm happy with my Canon G15 for that purpose.

Every photograph is an abstraction from reality.
Most people are more interested in the picture than the image.

I ended up ordering the Sony RX100, got a good deal on E-bay. Didn't go for the II or III, in the end I didn't feel it was really worth the extra few hundred bucks. If I love the camera that much and decide I want the upgrades, I'll wait a few years till they go down in price, as that's how I buy my cameras. ;) Looking forward to getting it and trying it out. No more missing opportunities because my big DSLR is at home.

I dont know why you wouldnt by a Refurb Canon SX50 rght now for 229. Keep looking Igot mine for 189 right after Christmas. Just buy it. One year warranty as well.

Just had to come back and say thanks to Rudi Maes for suggesting the RX100. It has become by far my favorite camera. It's got the manual controls including RAW, it's small enough to carry every day, yet produces DSLR quality shots... It's fun to use. I just can't say enough good things about it. I've found my camera soul mate. ;)
