I know, I know, printers are written about quite a bit on these fora ...

It's well into 2015 and, with my new FZ1000, it's nigh time I buy a new printer

Most of my printing will be on Letter size (8.5"x11") paper, of which I have good quality stock.

I'd like the ability to print larger, perhaps Ledger (11"x17") - but, my budget is not large

For this printer, I'm not looking to print on anything exotic, like canvas or clothing ...

What is your favorite printer? Why?

TIA

Thank you, all of you, for your honest and insightful comments.

FWIW, I just picked up a brand new, unopened Canon Pixma Pro-10 for $250 off of Craigslist. Apparently, Canon had a super promotion around the holidays and people are now cashing out ...
I bought a Canon printer a couple of years ago and was disappointed with the prints so I get my prints from Costco and they are quite good. They are also probably cheaper than prints from my own printer as the cost of ink is outrageous. Just my 2 cents worth since you hadn't gotten any replies.,

Mike:

I am using an Epson Aristocrat 837 printer. With its 6 color cartridges, it does a very acceptable job on photos. Printing photos was not the prime reason I chose it. It also does a nice job scanning documents and photos.

I use cheap brother printers only because you can fill them your self as they don't have chips. if I have any out standing images I get them printer in the lab. Their is just something about printing after a good days shooting, they hang on my wall for a few weeks and then in the bin.

cheers don

http://www.posterburner.com/ is my favorite, because with the price of photo printing at home, you might as well just outsource it and not have to maintain a printer on-site.
You know, I get that; but, often, I want to see it printed before I pay to have it professionally printed.

That's why I don't want to pay too much for a new printer.

I have an Epson R1800 I've had for many years, which make remarkable prints. However, when I let it sit for a week or two, the nozzles clog and I waste a lot of expensive ink getting it back in shape ... :-(

Without a doubt: my Canon Pro 100. Been printing for a few years early on in digital, moved away from printing, and back again as I bought the Pro 100 last fall and holy cow, it's giving me the fine quality detail that mail order has not given me. My cost per print image is much lower when I factor in all costs like printer, ink, and paper. I sell mostly landscape prints and this printer paid for itself many times over. When set to 4800x2400 dpi on high quality paper, the results are stunning.

Forgot to add that Canon bundled these printers into their DSLR camera/lens packages over the holidays and I picked up 2 (one for spare) at $120. each with 13x19 paper. Amazon sells them without the paper for $350 or so. Checking Craigslist shows a new one in your area at $150.

Is it really 43 pounds in weight?

How much does it cost to replace all ink one time?

Mike,

I have a Epson Stylus 1430 and am pleased with the results. This printer takes paper up to 13 inches wide and sells at a price premium to a 8.5 inch wide printer. From my FZ200and my prior Olympus 8080, I get satisfactory prints up to 12 inches x 16 inches. This printer has an excellent reputation in the Printing Forum -- accurate saturated Epson-type color. It uses 6 cartridges and is intended for dye ink. I use dye ink cartridges from www.swiftink.com -- affordable at $6 apiece and reliable. It is easy to get color close to that of Epson inks -- in the print dialogue, I set: gamma 1.8, contrast+6, and saturation +6.

Good luck.

Epson Artisan 50!!!!!! I never print larger than letter size. Very simple, reliable, Beautiful prints!!!!!!

All ink is outrageous:-(. I like the six individual cartridges so I only replace the color that is empty)

It is strictly a printer. I have an Epson scanner for that kind of work.

Warm regards,

p.s. relatively inexpensive IMHO, but it's probably cheaper to have others do the printing. I like to do my own!!!! It's fun

Canon Pro-100 is my favorite. Prints are gorgeous.

If you factor in the rebated, paper supply and ink that comes with it at B&H, the net cost of the printer is around $100 now. The rebate used to be a little richer so many got it for the equivalent of free!

I don't stock up on ink. As a casual printer, I order single $17 cartridges for two day delivery from Amazon when the indicators suggest a cartridge is getting low. I see no point in have a box of ink cartridges sitting on the shelf.

The Canon Pro-100 and it's direct competitor, the Epson 1440, are dye ink printers. It is said that dye ink prints may only last 20 or 30 years. Pigment ink prints may last 50 to a 100 years. The pigment version of the Pro-100 is the Pro-10. I think the pigment ink Epsons are the r2000 and r3000. People that print a lot and frequently may prefer the Canon Pro-1 and Epson 3880 due to significantly bigger ink tanks.

All print great color and good B&W. Many think that if you are focused on B&W, the extra cartridges needed fro the Pro-10 and r3000 have an advantage.

O, boy, if I could get it for $100 I'd get it now; but, alas, even with $41 worth of large format paper, it's still over $200 ... and, it really is over 43 pounds?

I'm still comparing the Pro-100 to the Epson Artisan 1430: Which is better quality photo printing? What is the actual photo printing cost?

I will use the new printer only for photos - I have plenty of other office printing options ...

Hi. I use a Canon Pro 100 with Precision Color inks and Permajet paper (usually Oyster). The inks make it reasonably cheap to run, and the results are ,I think, superb.

Yes, it is 43 pounds. I found a dedicated short metal table at Ikea. It sits in my office like an "end table".

If you count that you get real ink cartridges, not "trial size", you can subtract another $100.

+$398 for Printer

-$100 for the 8 color ink pack

-$75 for the list price of the 13x19 paper that happens to be on sale for less!

-$150 for the Canon rebate

+$0 for shipping

+$ for sales tax

-----------------------

$73 is the net price for the 43 pound printer that makes gorgeous prints, delivered to your doorstep!!!!
