Did you put a UV filter on it? If so, take it off.
Agree,Some flare when shooting into the sun is normal with Zeiss lenses - have several Zeiss lenses - zoom lenses and fixed focal lenght lenses - and the all show some flare when shooting against the sun.
There are coatings that can prevent this kind of flare but I doubt we would afford it!
And to be realistisk shooting into the sun is an extreme case. Usually the remedy is to hide the sun beeing something or to avoid the sun in the image or simply to accepting the fact that even the best lenses show flare when used in worse case scenarios.
Expecting no flare whatever is simply unrealistic expectations.
Thanks for the perspective.
Oh yes, I am not expecting miracles. In fact, the flair can have an emotional impact of its own. Some flare when shooting into the sun is normal with Zeiss lenses - have several Zeiss lenses - zoom lenses and fixed focal lenght lenses - and the all show some flare when shooting against the sun.

Sorry if I was not clear. I was not asking how to avoid flare. That is a different topic entirely.I am a little worried here, maybe my eyes should be returned to heaven or beyond for refurbishing, too, because if I look straight into the sun, I see similar artifacts. So how could a lens avoid them?
Of course i would squint and would then see better, but for your lens this - as you say - is a drawback. So why not shut it down to f/8 or so?
Just to experiment with when you can break the lens or any toy seems just like I did in my juvenile days ... to 'test' till 'it' breaks ... and then cry to mommy .... for a new toy ...
I wonder why you wrote this up, rather than learn yourself and tell us which technique might give a pleasing image; that would have been positive and a great contribution here ... .
I agree 100%. Your approach, the reason for it, and you result and reaction to your result, match my own experience.I too was shooting INTO the sun wanting to see what the lens looked like. I had NO filter on the lens and it was new to me, the 1st time I shot with it. Flair can be a wonderful thing and will happen when getting a bright source in the shot. I find the flair VERY controlled and pleasing from this lens. While it isn't a 2.8 or as sharp as I would like, its a pretty decent lens overall small and light. At $1350 USD vs $1700 USD for the canon its 'ok'. That said, it gets the job done and is auto focus.
Very true, and thanks for confirming that this kind/amount/quality is typically for the 16-35.No worry - this is NORMAL and you have a terrific lens at hand. No such thing as a perfect lens in this world...
