They don't publish the GN for the Sunpak Digital Flash, but I would guess it at around 50.

The G3 can't turn pre-flash off, so you need a slave flash that can ignore pre-flash which the DS20 cannot. So you need the Digital Flash Outfit.

However, you could use the DS20 as I do, with a Wein Smart Slave Trigger. HTH. PatiO.

Pardon my ignorance but what is GN?
Thanks.

The GN number is either expressed for range in feet or meters. The range of the flash is then calculated by dividing the GN number by the f-stop used. For example of the GN in feet is 50, then the range of the flash is 25 feet if the f-stop is f2, and 12.5 feet is the f-stop is f4. If the GN is expressed for meters, then divide the GN by the f-stop and you'll get the range in meters.

The higher the guide number (GN) the more powerful the flash, just as Dzidek and EJE said.

I use a rule of thumb that flashes with a GN under 15' (feet) are usually on a P&S camera and are too weak.

GNs of 15' to 50' are good indoors, low ceiling bounce and for closeup outdoor fill.

GNs of 50' - 120' are medium range for larger group shots indoors, ceiling bounced from low ceilings and for midrange outdoor fill.

GN's over 120' are BIG. Good for ceiling bounce in large rooms with higher ceilings (

Anyone care to add to or correct this info. I am only going by memory and may need some better rules. :^) PatiO.

Metz 34 CS-2 digital has some good reviews. One of the members of this forum used it and was very impressed by results. He also posted some comparison shots using S30 with and without slave flash.
You might try search under: "Canon S30 and slave flash"
Thanks.
