Hi all,

Finally it stopped raining here (amsterdam, europe) and I was able to get out and take some shots with my new G5. I want to thank everybody who was kind enough to post sample shots from their digital cams...it helped me a lot to decide which camera to buy. Maybe I can be of help for other people still trying to decide which camera to buy. Pics were taken during this weekend, still very very clouded and gray outside....when the sun will shine again I will update the site. They were taken on a walk in the neighbourhood.

Hello Bram

We have seen some very good pictures from the G5 lately, and your pictures are no exception.

I think this proves that those members here that have been counting out the G5 as not worth spending money on (too noisy, purple fringing, and we don't need the extra pegapixels.. etc.) were a bit too quick in their assumptions.
Looking forward to more pictures in a sunny weather.

Looks like your putting the G5 to good use. We could use the rain here :-)

Hi Bram......Pictures look great and I am wondering what were the settings that you used............Did you stay at ISO 50, as well?

In general I had the G5 in automatic mode, I didnt have much time to experiment, and I thought it was a good way to get a general impression of the cam. It seems I somehow lost the exif information on the ISO, it doesnt show, strange. I remember the pic from the shop (the last one) was on ISO 100 (focus 2.0, shutter 1/30, no flash). I know some other pics were on iso 100 as weel. I will try and find my iso values, they must be somewhere! Most pics are with focus 4.0.

I had purchased the G5 and most of my pics at ISO 50 were tack sharp but going to any ISO above 100 and you cud see the difference with the level of noise. So I brought it back to my local guy and exchanged it for an Olympus E20 which I discovered had a real sloooow write processing which was unacceptable........Now I am goping back to the G5.

Since I am a 1D and 10D user for most of my shooting, I just have to realize that the G5 as my back-up does not have the functions and quality and the ability to manipulate various shooting modes as does a DSLR......I have to get set in my mind that my G5 will serve its purpose as more or less a back up with shooting limits to what it can achieve. I am not bashing the G5....I have just come to the self realization that my own original choices/purpose for buying the G5 was flawed. The G5 is one great compact digicam.

Great pictures, Bram!
I'm waiting for my G5 arrived today.
I saw many bad comments about G5 today and got worried.
But your beautiful pictures made me feel relieved.
Thank you so much...

I don't see any CA or ISO noise problems here.
I only see one blueish bright spot in the last store photo.
Is it the CA? It even looks beautiful!

Yes, please experiment with higher ISOs and some night shots and share them with us. I'll post some pictures of G5 this week too.
And how's the focus? Is it reall slow at indoor low light shoot?

Cheers,
---- J. Bae ----

If you use the E10 with the viewfinder instead of the LCD it will be just like the other cameras. You CAN continue to shoot as the buffer empties out, but the LCD will NOT come back up until all the writing is done.

The last shot has a beautiful example of CA (purple fringing) that should not be there at all.

I am not saying it is objectionable, bit I am saying it is there.

All the other shots do not have the type of light that would produce the CA so if it was there the camera would be in big trouble.

Outdoor sunlit pictures will tell if the CA is just here and there, or if it wants center stage all the time.

I am wondering if the S50, with the same sensor but a different lens, will react differently to the CA phenomenon. I hope Phil Askey puts a little comparison between the G5 & S50 in this area.

Hello,

Thanks for sharing your G5 pictures. I am not trying to be critical, but I think people buying a digital camera should be aware of the CA and purple fringing problem. To say there is no CA, it is impossible.

Here is a list of pictures that exhibite purple fringing:

Afbeelding29 - around the window between the two pillars.

Afbeelding25 - This is a good torture test for G5, it come out OK, but PF all around the outline of the stairs.

I also think the overcast condition also helps to reduce the CA, as you get a very nice diffused light instead of bright contrasty sunny condition.
Where's the noise and the CA? Berge

Next week I will take pics with the G5 under more "extreme conditions", so to speak. I have to document some expositions in several musea. Also some objects in, hopefyully, bright sunlight. I can post the pics if anyone is interested.
Bram.

I cant get a link to your shots, I get taken to somewhere called startsurfingplus.com instead

sounds like you got a good G5 !

Hi Bram, very nice pictures.

Your pictures however, demonstrate why I returned my G5. All your daylight pictures look great, but your last picture indoors is noisy, even when resized to this size. I know it's iso100, but still.

Well, sorry for the late reply (vacation) but this pic isnt 100 ISO but taken at 200 ISO. My mistake.

EJE,

Why do you have to flog this point to death? Almost everybody on DPreview knows by now that you returned your G5. Don't you think
it's about time to let it go?

And another thing - Bram wrote that he already has his G5, not that he is thinking of getting one - making your comment totally and utterly useless and untimely.
