Anyone else excited by the S6 and S6 edge?

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/samsung-galaxy-s6-top-features,news-20522.html

  • The real-time HDR and 0.7 second camera startup time look appealing to me.
  • Using the phones heart rate monitor as a white balance detector
  • f/1.9 lens for both front and rear cameras
  • 16 MP with OIS
Impressive what they can shove in a cell phone these days :)

No offence Eric, but mobile phones belong here:

Much more poeple will be interested in this topic over there.

While I'm sure this phone can challenge many (most?) small sensor p&s, I'm not interested in this kind of photography. But kudos to S for releasing such an innovative small device.

I'm getting the S6 Edge :-)

Looks beautiful!

I am taking advantage of the fact that this forum is all Samsung cameras, no specification as to type :)

Those other forums are extremely dead, first page going back months. I should probably go over to DPReview Connect, but I like how the Galaxy phones integrate with their cameras.

The reason I like it to be a good camera is I have it with me 100% of the time, the NX1 not as often. I do like that they have 4k video and such with it, of course it won't be at level of NX1, still nice.

It does! I am getting the edge too. Haven't decided what color yet, I like how they shimmer. I am easily entertained by shiny objects :)

Phone with built in camera remains a phone, not a camera. Anyway, see the interest yourself.

Remains a camera to me. Phones don't take 4k video nor have lenses and image sensors. Lines are blurring. There is no reason that the Galaxy NX camera couldn't make a phone call if they added a modem to it, and it can make VOIP calls.

Heck, even the NX1 is running Tizen, there is no reason you couldn't make an App for it (well Samsung could) to allow it to make a VOIP call, it has Internet, microphone, and a speaker. It even has Bluetooth, if you could hack it you could pair a headset with it and use it for audio (speaking of which, Samsung, you should add this feature to pair wireless BT headsets with the NX1 for audio level checking).

Even if I agree to a certain extent, in few years all the objects will be on the internet. That's why ipv6 has been conceived (lots of ip addresses) and that's what the internet of things is all about.

But that does not mean that all the objects will be phones.

I agree that the sensor, lens and processor in s6 could challenge many p&s cameras, so ok, it could be considered a (p&s) camera or a small videocamera (challenging gopro?).

Exactly, and I mention it here since this forum is the only place for Samsung cameras, and the S6 is part Samsung camera.

What I really wanted to bring up were some of these features:
Vivid Images with a Fast, Bright Camera

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are equipped with an incredibly vivid, bright and fast front and rear camera. The F1.9 lenses and high resolution sensors on both front (5MP) and rear (16MP) cameras provide the most superior image quality in a smartphone, even in the dark. In addition, Auto Real-time High Dynamic Range (HDR), Smart Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and IR Detect White Balance provide advanced light sensitivities and crisp camera solutions. Furthermore, a new "Quick Launch" feature give users fast, direct access to the camera from any screen in just 0.7 seconds* by simply double clicking the home key button. These advanced camera functions enable users to capture their most precious and personal moments in uncompromising quality, however and wherever they want.
So what of these features would we like to see in a mirrorless NX camera?

I for one would like to see:
  • a dedicated WB sensor (as opposed to only imaging sensor).
  • Real time HDR sounds pretty cool (think optical like viewfinder).
Other things are more smartphone/compact camera features.

I would also like cloud integration with my camera (Samsung has been good at this). I like that I can quick transfer JPEG files over to my phone, and my phone will automatically back those up on Google drive. In this example, the phone could by my S6 Edge I plan on getting.

This is irrelevant.

I can make vopi call from my laptop, that has build in camera. It's still a laptop.
It even has Bluetooth, if you could hack it you could pair a headset with it and use it for audio (speaking of which, Samsung, you should add this feature to pair wireless BT headsets with the NX1 for audio level checking).

Still, NX1 is not a phone, Galaxy NX is not a phone and Samsung S6 is a phone. You can disagree ;-)

I agree, let's pretend that for this context that the S6 is a camera. Cell phone cameras have been pushing bounds trying to become more than just a crappy web camera. Most are pretty comparable to a fixed lens point and shoot these days. The Samsung S6 looks pretty good to me in that regard. Is it an NX1? Heck no.

With high end cameras, I do like to see them keeping the phone separate from the camera, I don't want to use the NX1 as a phone as you state, it is not, and to make it so would be ridiculous. I would like to see them continue developing tablet/phone interaction with the camera, and let the phone do the job it was meant for (modem/voice functions), but make it easy to get content to my phone/tablet for processing.

Would I ever even try to use the S6 camera for serious work? No, but I would consider using it to upload an image from the NX1 quickly, or when I am out and about and don't have my NX1 with me and glad to have the 0.7 second start time of the S6 camera App. My S4 can be painfully slow at times to start and by the time it is up and running my photo opportunity is long past :)

Eric,

First was the ACC battery that I bought on your word. Very pleased.

Second was the 12mm Rokinon lens I bought on your word. Very pleased

Now, the Samsung S6 seems good enough for you.

Let me know when you get yours and that you are happy.

That is when I will go straight out and get mine.

Thanks ;-)

Also back to 28mm lens because the S5 had 31mm.

I ve collected a few samples i found on flickr and on phone review site.

First photos captured by the reporters (and not official samsung samples) look amazing and not amazing for a phone but for a standalone camera with 1/2.3 sensor.
I think its the first Real improvement in the camera of the S series since galaxy s2 and s3 that shared an 8mp sensor.

Indoor shots look much improved and even the night shot posted by samsung themselves look good enough for everyday use.
Samsung is into nokia pureview terittory if you ask me.

Now if they are smart and they allow RAW output so you can apply your own noise reduction it would be a very capable pocket camera!
