Occasionally my 7i gives a "no card" message when I set it to play to view some stored photos- card is a Viking 256mb. I have to turn the camera on and off a couple of times before it will "see" the card and let me view what's on it. Is this normal with this card? is it the camera? Only happens occasionally. thanks

Hi John

What you describe is definately NOT normal for a Dimage 7i. Is this the only card that has this problem ( I am assuming that you have more than 1 card )? If so, the problem is with the card. If it happens with more than one card, there might be something wrong with the camera.

Try this. transfer all the images to your computer, then format the card IN THE CAMERA. Then tranfer the images back to your card and see what happens.

I agree with Roy. I have used 2 Viking 256mb cards with my 7i for over a year and have not run into the problem you describe. Sorry you're having trouble - I hope reformatting solves the problem.

John,

I just got a D7i. It's my first digital camera (starting at the top!) and my first experience with flash memory.

I bought a Viking 256MB with the cam, and I'm having the problem that you describe. On power-up (either from turning the switch or after an auto-power-down), the camera sometimes says "unable to use card". Power-cycling usually helps, sometimes doesn't. It happens quite often, and is not limited to playback mode.

I got worried yesterday when it happened about 20 times in a row.

Formatting in the camera does NOT work.

I am trying to decide if I need to return (1) the camera or (2) the memory card. This may take a good deal of diagnosis.

Even though you got two responses saying this is not normal, I searched the archives of this forum and found quite a few reports of this problem, seemingly not Viking-specific. Plenty of speculation, but nobody seems to know what the problem really is.

I have a theory that I'm testing. The theory is that it can happen only if power-up occurs within a few seconds of power-down. As I write this, my D7i is cycling through an 84-shot interval sequence. It will be encouraging if all 84 shots make it. I'll find out tonight.

I don't know about you, but I have found this rather frustrating. A potentially great camera is rendered arbitrarily flaky and unreliable in the field, with yet no clear solution.

Well, when I came home from work I saw that the D7i took only 3 of the 84 shots. Presumably it got an "unable to use card" on the 4th shot. After several power cycles I got the CF card to read again.

I'd like to know if this is the card or the camera. Any hints?

This is a Viking 256MB, and formatting in the camera did not work.

I guess I'll repeat this experiement with the 16MB Lexar card that came with the camera (my only other CF card) and see what happens.

iT'S NOt the camera, it's the card. I have a 2nd. 7i that i borrowed, does the same thing. My Lexar 256mb card never does this. i registered the card on the Viking web page and then left an email requesting a replacement card. Viking emailed me back that I will get a reply in a day. So don't worry that it's the camera, it's not. That's good news

Excellent news. Thank you for the report. This is why I started off with a 256MB card instead of a 1GB card.

I'm using a Viking 512 card as primary and a Lexar 256 as backup. Both occasionally will give error messages if I switch on and quickly go directly to some position other then Camera mode, such as to Setup. If I switch off, then on and hesitate in Camera mode, it works fine and I can switch to any other mode OK. I've gotten used to it.

I did have the Viking fail once when taking a series in continuous mode. It locked up and had to be formatted in a computer - camera wouldn't recognize it. That's when I bought the Lexar to compare. Don't know if it's better because that failure hadn't recurred, in about 1500 shots. Both cards seem to be OK with the exception of the error message as above, but there's something about the Viking failure that's worrying. I will try it again in continuous mode to see.

I do weddings, where a failure can be a disaster. So far, so good since that one loss.

Viking customer support promised a response to my problem within 24hrs, so far it's 48 hrs. with no reply.

I have had a Viking 256MB for almost a year and never had a single problem, though I very seldom use my view mode.

I have this same problem with my new 7hi and a Kingston 256CF. I have resorted to taking the card out and putting it back in, which seems to fix the problem. I haven't lost any pictures yet, but it really bugs me.

Note, my camera was refurbished, though based on this thread I don't think that is relevant.

I HAD the same problem with my 7Hi & Viking 512MB card. I haven't had the problem since the new firmware was installed. Try a firmware update if your not already at the current version.

i started getting the same problem after about 500 shots (in total) and 400 (using this Kingston CF256 card). i saw the problem when i was using the "Play" and "Transfer" mode (i have a reader, but i left it at home). what i observed the problem is most likely to occur when turning any of these modes from "off" too quickly, i.e. the camera does not have enough time to boot. i never had the problem in the "camera" mode. and since people who wrote here are using different cards and the glitch seemed to disappear after a firmware upgrade, i assume that it is actually a glitch with the camera rather then card. however, it might be both.
btw, are you all using DPS-9000?
