I bought a Powershot G5 an an ungrade from my G3.... What a mistake!!In low light conditions, I get terrible results using ISO 400 with the the G5. The same pictures taken in the same conditions with the G3 are a lot better.

The few extra pixels of the G5 are supplied at the cost of a major degradation of the results for every pictures taken at ISO 200 and up. Night shots are noisy and worst than with G3.

I am seriounly thinking to trade back the G5 for my old G3....

With this experience, If you are looking for a Canon camera, get a G3. If you want to upgrade to G5, think twice, the resusts are far to be as good as with the G3.

I wonder why Canon let this product out if it is not capable to produce results at least equal to the G3.

I have a G5 and have never used a G3. So far I have been happy with the results however I don't shoot above ISO100. Have you done some comparisons in the 50-100 ISO range.

Yes I did and the results are good with both cameras. Of course, you have more pixels to play with if you use the G5 in the case you want to crop the picture.

This is where the G5 is ahead.

Overall speed of the G5 is also behind compare to the G3... more pixel to deal with with, I guess, the same engine..

Yves,

It is called "keeping up with the Jones' in the 5MP race". The G5 is a big disappointment, as it should be; it is nothing more than a G3 (with worse performances in some areas!) with an extra MP and a hefty price premium. I've considered the G5, but could not justify paying the additional $200; I am very happy with my G3, which I picked up a few days ago. With the extra savings, I will be buying myself a few desperately needed CF cards, and maybe an extra battery.

I could understand your feeling, as one would expect more from Canon, however, the G5 is not a "new" camera. In my opinion, the G5 is a patchwork camera to keep up with other 5MP cameras from Nikon, Sony, Olympus, etc.. Of course, the logic is clear: putting 5MP's onto a sensor optimized for 4MP's will yield some derogatory results. Remember, the G2 is also 4MP's, so Canon has been reliably using this 4MP sensor for some time now. Therefore, squeezing an extra MP into that same size sensor may be far from ideal.

Fortunately, I do envision Canon releasing a true brand new camera in the G-series line in the near future. Maybe, you SHOULD return the G5 and keep your G3, while you wait for Canon's next new offer.

cheers,

Homage.

I noticed in some other posts how some were complaining of noise in faces taken in shade or shadowed (when outside). Now that I think about it I too have a few picks I took and printed where the shade areas do look noisy. More so than I would have expected. I thought it might have just been a wierd moment or something. I think in those situations my S400 would have done a better job. Very interesting. I use the camera for a great deal of product studio type shots for my website and catalog and for that the camera really shines. Hard to take a bad picture.

I guess I will just sell it on ebay and ungrade in 6 months when the G6 comes out.
