well, I actually had considered tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC, but it became out of budget for personal reason. So I started to consider nikkor 24-85mm f3.5-5.6 VR for substitution.

Main reason for those standard zoom lenses is for wide usability for both wide landscape and portrait in both outdoor and studio.

The 24-85 will be appropriate substitution for tamron 24-70 VC in that I'm not capable of purchasing tamron?

Oh, I have one more question. If I'm planning to shoot both wide landscape and portrait, then which following combinations will you choose? I have D610 and speedlight.

1. Samyang(Rokinon) 14mm f2.8 + Nikkor 50mm f1.8G + Nikkor 85mm f1.8G

2. Nikkor 50mm F1.8G + Nikkor 24-85mm f3.5-5.6 VR

3. Nikkor 28mm f1.8G + Nikkor 85mm f1.8G

4. Nikkor 50mm f1.8 + Tamron 24-70mm VC

Go with # 4

I actually own the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 vc and a D600. Great all around lens.

It depends what you have already - it seems like you are starting from scratch?

For the price, the 24-85 is a good lens, especially is you keep at f8 (the weakness is corners at wider focal lengths). Not super sharp at 85mm either, but decent.

I would not consider option (1) - the manual focus 14mm is a bother, unless you absolutely need 14 and have a low budget.

Option (2) would be OK, but I would sub the 85 f1.8G for the 50 - it is a better portrait lens and super sharp.

Option (3) 28MM is not really wide. The new 20mm f1.8g would be a better choice, similar price.

Option (4) I would get the 85 1.8G rather than th 50.

The Nikon 28 and 85 1.8s are an excellent combination. The 85 1.8G is the best value I've ever come across in lenses and will easily do for portrait work. The 28 1.8G is compact, sharp, light, and high quality. Both will give much better results than the 24-85VR (which is acceptable for what it is). For that matter both, like with any quality prime, will give better results than any zoom.

Yes and no. If you need wide aperture there is no point even to compare the lenses. ON the other hand if you use only smaller apertures or can cope with them, yes, you can replace one for another here.

Nikkor 24-85 is the second best for all-purpose lens, losing only for Nikkor 24-120 f/4, IMO.

You can use it for portraits but you have to be aware of its limitations and learn to cope with them or to accept its results. Actually you can make portraits with almost all lenses... depending what are you looking for and your skills.

None. Personally I would go towards a general purpose zoom lens (either Nikkor 24-85 or 24-120 f/4) and a Nikkor 85 f/1.8 (very good compromise between cost and performance).

All the best,

I have owned all of these lenses and completely agree with Osvaldo.

Do a research on this cheapo plastic Nikon 28-80mm f3.3-5.6G. Around $60.00 used.

Agreed. One of the cheapest and sharpest Nikkor AF G lenses out there, from the film era. I got one as a kit coming with the old Nikon F75/N75. It's sold for ~ $50-$60, in the used market.

Here some sample shots with this lens, tested with the D810. Pretty good and descent IQ, in a pretty cheapo & plastic body. It looks like Nikkon used all its tricks at the time to make this affordable lens, aiming for IQ, not built construction.

All about comprises

However I agree with the 24-85 VR suggestion.

It's very good value and performs very well.

It's light at perfect for the more compact cameras. I have done professional work with it too.

If like the tamron 24-70 VCD but the weight is making me think twice
