Fuji S3

Hi Ed,

That's very kind of you Ed. Oh yes that was another superb day
(just posted some of that day in S&G). Aha Ed I'm also a bit of a
lonely wolf but most of my friends are also a bit lonely wolves and
sometimes we met for a few hours and go out together each doing
what he likes to do, so I think that this would not be a real
problem for you.
I was quite sure that your weren't also a cropper except for the
situations that you described.
Oh yes I know that, that's why I bought the Nikon F long ago
because I want that 100% coverage, which was especially very
important for making reproductions. Oh and I would like to have
interchangeable viewscreens. I think that I if the S3 is going full
frame that I will keep one or both of my S2's and buy one S3 for
the wide angle work and some other lenses.
I think that actually there are already more than enough pixels for
a big part of the users, but I'm in the smaller part and want as
many pixels as possible as I need them regulalry for very big
poster sized prints or even billboards. I'm very interested to see
what the future (on camera's using Nikkor lenses) will bring us. If
you ever must come to Belgium and you would like it you may use one
of my Fuji's.

With very warm regards out of your roots country,

Your friend,

Dirk

Can't you people give it up and live in the world as it is now. I can't believe the junk like this that gets this kind of response to compared to really ligitiment posts. What comes, comes. I'm more interested in what I can accomplish with my S2 than what I might do next year or the year after with an SX?. Are you people really photographers or just tech juckies? I know I've got a lot to learn with what I've got with out worring about tomorrow. And you ask then why did I respond to this post, go figure!

Semo.

I think you are right, I've been there with the constant upgrade in Computer hardware, I just could not afford to keep upgrading kit. What is important and I think that this is the case for the majority of DLSRs is that you can get very acceptable results which a client would not complain about.

In a 10x8 picture will the client question whether it was taken by a 6 mega pixel camera or a 24 megapixel camera ?? I doubt it, perhaps you or I could distinguish the difference, but generally its not going to make the difference.

It may be a problem if you have just bought an S2 and then the S3 is released the next month, with a higher spec and lower price, but thats life, it would effect the kind of picture you take !! :-)

Well all I can say is bring it on. I have been waiting for a full frame digital that I can afford for some time. There are plenty of multipliers out there for those who want them now. There simply aren't enough full framers out there for the rest of us. How about you give us a chance.....

Cheers,
Mike

Hi James,

Thanks for the info, but I hope personnaly that it's wrong, I don't
want a full frame. Some of my lenses will degrade in quality as
they will use also the borders of the glass and I will fall in the
range of lenses who costs ten thousand dollars for doing what I'm
doing now. I'm so happy with the sensor size as it is now. For some
lenses in the wide angle range and also for the 85mm 1,4 and the
105mm DC I would prefer a full frame but than I would consider
buying a Nikon body or a Kodak for using those and I still could
have the excellent 1,5 factor on my telelenses. Better would even
be if they would bring out an S3 with full frame and one with half
frame, I would buy both then.
With very kind regards,

Dirk

...in my earlier post. Some people just don't know their math and start interpreting full-frame and cropfactors and ccd-sizes without knowing/using the facts!

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1020&message=5503921
Hi Dirk,

You are quite right, of course.

Let me tell you one way that things work out...

In the "six megapixel mode" The S2 produces a file that is 3024
pixels by 2016 pixels. This is from a CCD that Phil says is 23 mm
by 15.5 mm. That should be the S2's natural mode, 12 megapixels
are produced through interpolation, of course.

3024 pixels by 2016 pixels is a total of 6,096,384 pixels (American
use of commas to break up a long number). Call it 6.1 megapixels.

Now, let me extend the 6.1 megapixel density to full frame to see
how many pixels a full frame would have to have to have the same
resolution at the CCD as the S2. (Resolution at the CCD is
important, because if there is a match to the S2, it means that a
full frame image could be cropped to look exactly like an S2 image.)

Okay, here we go, hold on...

Full frame is 24 mm by 36 mm (film cameras often go a hair larger,
but not smaller...24 by 36 is the Standard Definition).

The S2 6.1 megapixels is 3024 pixels per 23 mm, using that as a
factor, we get a matching full frame pixel size of:

(36 x (3024/23)) x (24 x (3024/23)) pixels, which is
4733 x 3155 pixels which multiplies out to 14, 932,615 pixels.
That is, 14.9 megapixels.

That means if a full frame camera produces less than 14.9
megapixels, cropping to match the Fuji S2 frame will produce an
image with less resolution than the Fuji S2 Pro!!

Dirk, a full frame camera would be meaningful for the way you like
to work (assuming you would crop the full frame to match the S2),
only if it produced a native uninterpolated file that was more than
14.9 megapixels.

You might want to print this out and keep it handy, or bookmark my
answer, since I see this discussion come up many, many times. Of
course, you are welcome to use my answer whenever you have a need
to.

My very warmest regards...

Your friend,

Ed (Master's of Science degree in Mathematics)
I don't own a Master's degree, but I did score straight 10's (out of 10) on math in 3D-math (don't know the correct English word, in Dutch it is "ruimtemeetkunde") and 8-9's (out of 10) without ever touching a book on the rest of the subjects... So I do know a little math as well.

The only difference in your calculation is that you use the height-factor on the width as well, whereas I used to different factors. Therefore you calculate a value of about 14.9MP and not 18MP. Oh, and I didn't know the exact measurements of a full-frame CCD (Thom filled me in on that one).

Thanks Ed.

Cheers!

Again, your are all missing my point
We either are all ****** or you don't make your point very well
Retrace my threads and you will find I wrote:
“..FujiFilm as
serious about digital”- no?
I have not used all the digital products Fuji makes but it does not
take a smart person to reach a different conclusion (ie. Fuji is
committed) so damn- give it a rest.
But you are doing the same mistake yourself. You had several messages where you were religiously defending the EX SW without putting it in the contest of the "Fuji commitment". If someone disagrees with you on something, the best technique is to carry you around by the nose and start talking about something less relevant that is only marginal to the main topic of discussion.

I answered to your post about the SW not other but fundamentally I don't disagree with you on the general question. If you have a strong opinion about one item of discussion (the commitment in this case), any single post that you do has to re-orient the discussion on that subject.

On the contrary you got all upset and you looked like a cheerleader (that you are not) for the EX SW.

BTW I respect you but I'm not your buddy, don't call me that way.

Just to play the devils advocate......

by this reasoning, we should all be using a 3 MP S1 as these were state of the art a few years ago, and many people were happy with them.
But I must say it would take more than just 10 MP to drain my wallet

Faster AF, better build, BETTER VIEWFINDER, and I will be tempted

I'd be very surprised if an S3 body ships before PMA in Spring of
2004.
james - you are correct. before i bought the s-2, i had a fuji rep here in the studio (about one month ago) and he said the new camera would be introduced no sooner than that. also, he seemed to indicate that it would not be a full frame chip.

S3
As a (reasonably) happy DCS760 user who owns an S1 as a backup, I have been awaiting the 14n but have been swayed considerably toward the S2 as a result of viewing the last 15,000 (or so it seems/feels) of your posts, James.

Like you, I don't give a jot about WHICH camera I use ... only the end result. Having been a Nikon user for the past 20 yrs or so, I would have enjoyed keeping 'in the system' so to speak but now I am swayed to look at the 1Ds or the S2. The S2 would be an excellent interim step to allow us to evaluate other newcomers to market such as the rumored S3.

Workflow is very important to our company as time is money and any production room time needs to be charged back to our client (someone has to pay for it)

James, I am blown away with your skin tones and hair detail on the S2. With the exception of workflow within ARC (Adobe Raw Converter), are you happy with the S2?

If you are happy with the S2 quality, which specific ARC with S2 issues are you experiencing?
