OT: Laptops - What Are YOU Using?...

with WinXP Home on both. Excellent laptops--- the 8500 is really great and it's fast.
GOD, this is getting to be an EXPEN$IVE HOBBY!!!

Shopping a laptop now, for my photography/video/audio (and to use
in the field for my computer business too)...

Looked at that (should say, been OBSESSING on ) one from Toshiba,
5205 S705, with the cool anti-glare home theater cover on the
screen, but hell, $500 extra for a TV Tuner that I'm never going to
use? More into performance, screen size/resolution, storage,
network connectivity, and having firewire/usb2 for the cam, reader,
hard disk recorder, etc.

Looks like I'm going to end up with a Sony GRT (custom config).
16.1" UXGA screen, P4 2.8Ghz, 256MB RAM (I can get RAM alot cheeper
than Sony wants to sell it for later), 60GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD, 2 yr.
extended warranty - $ 2,219.

THANK GOD for TOLERANT WIVES (promised her a new G5 Mac for X-Mas).

What are you's'all guyz (that's how we say it in the south) using
in the field?

Happy 4th all!

Getting to be, I wouldn't dare add up the costs over the years!

I use an Acer Centrino Tablet in the field. Tablets are much easier than pure notebooks when you are in the open (it can convert to one in under 5 seconds if needed).

I'm thinking of selling my powerbook. I bought it to take on the road but I'm staying at home and like my desktop. Is it worth much? I paid $3100 in Sep. plus bought the 2 yr replacement warranty. I've got it set up in the living room but my transmitter won't talk to it, only likes pc stuff (I've got 2 pcs and an Epson 1280 in the computer room.)

I'd be glad to hear any suggestions/experience you may have.

Thanks

When you say transmitter won't talk to it are you talking about a wireless router?

I have 4 wireless windows machines and 3 wireless macs all working and sharing files and the internet connection fine. This should not be a problem.

Depending if you really need the money I wouldn't sell it. Right now a new 15" G4/867 powerbook is going for $1999 and a G4/1 ghz is going for $2,594. It really depends on you, if you want to get rid of it and buy something else with the money; or it might be good for those times you taake trips.

Hi,

I did decide to go with the Toshiba 5205 S705 -- the TV tuner
was something I could live with because the laptop can basically
work as a Tivo-like box and the VCR at home is on its last legs.
The screen is just about the best one I've seen on a laptop.
The CD-RW/DVD-RW is also a huge plus. In addition the ability
to go up to 120GB total drive space is nice -- I've heard rumors
that Toshiba will soon have 80GB drives available.

The only disadvantages I see are the weight (about 8-9
pounds) and the heat it generates. I would honestly consider
this system as a desktop replacement vs. something to haul
around in the field. Battery life is about average which might
also be an issue for those who stray from power for too long.

In the end, this system was picked primarily for my software
development efforts vs. photography. I'm certain I would have
picked differently if I needed a laptop for photography and was
going to be doing a lot of traveling with it.

Just tried the 17" for two weeks...kinda big. Will try the 12" for the next two weeks.

But I heard that the new 15" will be the laptop to buy!

I just got a Dell 600m Centrino notebook. The SXGA+ screen is
awesome. 1.6GHz Pentium M (faster than 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 M I
think), 512 DDR RAM, 40GB HD, 64MB ATI Video Card, 2x
CD/DVD-Burner, 802.11b Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, all for under $2000 and
weights about 5lbs.
I just got a 600m too, and it's great! You forgot to mention awesome battery life, I get almost 4 hours with mine. With a Wifi network set up at home and Windows XP, I can use remote desktop from the laptop to log onto my desktop system anywhere in my home. Very nice. My previous laptop was a Sony Vaio and the battery life was horrendous, maybe 20-30 minutes fully charged. Horrid. I'd caution anyone shopping for a laptop to be sure it has USB 2.0, a lot of them still come with USB 1.1. My only gripe with the system is that it only has 2 USB ports, and no Firewire, yet includes a serial and parallel port. Dumb.

I just use it for general computing and photo editing. It is VERY Quick. The ONLY issue I have with is the WIFI is not "G" is is the slower 802.11b.
I have a 4074 3.06 With HT,
How well does it perform?

I'm thinking of buying one of the HT capable models as a desktop
replacement. It'll be used mostly for video editing, photo
editing, and surfing the net. I'm thinking the "HT" part of it
will help when I want to do all three at the same time.

I do computers for a living. I bought 1.3 million worth of desktops, servers and laptops last year for the university I work for. I've tried and continue to try laptops from all vendors. I buy IBM Thinkpads exclusively. They have proven out to be the best in performance/value/reliability that I can buy. I'd reccomend IBM or the Dell Latitude series as they offer the longest life cycle as far as support and line continuance in the industry. The new Centrino system is interesting and is proving itself to be an advantage worth having. The Pentium M processor (not to be confused with the P4-M) is the Centrino chip. The Centrino system is only named as such when a vendor uses all 3 parts of the Centrino system, Processor, chipset and wireless. If you don't need wireless, you can buy a Pentium M machine and get the same performance. Buy the fastest cpu and at least 512 of ram (XP Pro) and it'll do everything you need with cycles left over.

I have had most major and several 3rd party manufactured units over the years, but the several Toshiba's I've owned have been the only bulletproof ones. The one I use now is mainly for the reasons of photo editing. It's a 5105-S701 (last Novembers model) and it's a Pentium IV 1.8mhz model but I stuffed it with a full ghz of DDR RAM so it handles Photoshop and anything else I throw at it (multimedia and such) with the greatest of ease. It never crashes as I keep it clean of junk and spyware. I clean out dead stuff not being used as well, defrag weekly and keep my Microsoft XP updates up to snuff. The sound is rather spectacular as well using that Harmon/Kardon speaker arrangement on the front corners aimed at the user give a nice stereo image, as well as the little subwoofer mounted underneat the center of the bottom. The keyboard suites me just fine being a decent touch typist, and most of all the wonderfully rich and bright 15" UXGA Theatre Screen that Toshiba makes affords a wider angle of view.

Yup, gotta love that 4 hour battery life. It just keeps going and going and going...

About the lack of Firewire, you could get a PCMCIA card with a 2 Firewire Port like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3421386065&category=3710
Only about $50 shipped.

I just ordered one.

I disagree about buying the fastest CPU available. You usually pay a huge premium for that and the added speed is usually not worth that much extra cost. I usually order the 2nd fastest CPU available. Like Pentium M just came out with 1.7GHz, so I got a 1.6GHz (which dropped in price quite a bit).
Buy the fastest cpu and at least 512 of ram (XP Pro)
and it'll do everything you need with cycles left over.

Good point...

I'm used to the heavy discounts that we get in .edu and with those, I buy the latest and greatest for pennies more than the last version. Do your research and see where the price point is when you buy.
