I'm going to buy this lens soon and was curious to know if it comes with a hood, or do I have to buy one separately. If I do, the Canon hoods are pretty expensive at $30 (come on, it's a simple piece of plastic!) so are there other cheap ones that will do the job as good as a Canon hood?

The hood(EW-83E) is included in the package, together with a soft lens pouch.

For future reference, I believe all L lenses come with a hood.

I was rather shocked when I got my 17-40, the hood is huge! You won't be able to be unnoticed in walkabout situations.

BE WARE

The lense hood causes some vinginetting with the 10D because of the 1.6 multiplier.

Wouldn't it be worse on a full frame camera? The 10D uses less of the image!

Check-out the lens hoods sometime for lenses like the 300/2.8 or 600/4. $300-$500 for a piece of plastic !

I must admit, I gotta problem with typo's

The 10D/D60/D30 could all use a longer (deeper?) hood, there's a company who makes just such add on hoods that have been mentioned here before.

The multiplier is actually a cropping that will chop off any vignetting on the periphery. If there were any vignetting, it would show up on a full frame camera but not on the 10D. Regardless, there is no vignetting because the hood was designed to go with the 17-40/4L. And the multiplier has nothing to do with it.

the lens hood on my 17-40 has NEVER caused vignetting..

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so

I was rather surprised at how large the lens+hood combo is myself. Very unsubtle in a street situation ;)

It's quite a good hood, too. Not just plastic - there's a felt-like inner surface to eliminate reflections into the lens off of the hood itself.

Yes pretty. but you can remove it! On the sigma 15-30 it's built it.

I have done several shot with the 17-40 (not that much yet though) without useing the hood becasue I did not have to in those situations, and I was happy with the shots.

With all Canon L lenses a lens hood and soft case are included.
