Yep, the camera also keeps track of the highest image number IT has seen.
Then to decide on the next numbered image, it uses the HIGHER of its own memory and the highest numbered image on the CF card.
This avoids the following problem:
Camera's last shot was image #1325
The new CF has image #1350 on it (maybe borrowed CF from a friend).
If you started shooting at #1326, you'd very quickly approach #1350, and then have to either delete that image, or skip over it (making you wonder where the heck it came from).
So, the camera just starts at #1351, instead.
From what I see the numbering logic must be a little more complex
than that, otherwise you should get identical image numbers if you
are using more than one card. And if you format one card in your PC
and then put in your camera and starts taking pics. The camera has
to store the last number internally so it knows where to continue.
