Canon service took 1475 images!?

I took my 10D and lenses to Canon service for adjusting and checking AF. When I left it the counter was at 253 and when I got it back a week later it said 1728!

I'm not sure whether the counter can be upset when they fiddle with the camera, but the AF is still rear focusing...

Nope.

They probably just used a CF card that had image number 17xx on it. They probably only took a few images.

But by using a CF card that had a high-numbered image still on it, your camera jumped past it.

This is perfectly normal.

Bummer about the rear-focusing.

WHY SO MANY SHOTS ON MY 10D ?

If the counter system is set to continous (the default) then the camera simply adds 1 to the number of the last picture on the last card used.

So, if Canon, a repair shop, a store - whoever - inserts a CF card and makes a shot, the number assigned will be the last number on the CF card +1.

If you think about it this is the only way the count could be ontinued from one card to another.

But it often confuses people - who may feel they have been shipped a used camera (when the store or Canon simply made a test shot) - or people may think a large number of shots were made during repair, etc

What function on the camera gives you the photo count?

From what I see the numbering logic must be a little more complex than that, otherwise you should get identical image numbers if you are using more than one card. And if you format one card in your PC and then put in your camera and starts taking pics. The camera has to store the last number internally so it knows where to continue.

Yep, the camera also keeps track of the highest image number IT has seen.

Then to decide on the next numbered image, it uses the HIGHER of its own memory and the highest numbered image on the CF card.

This avoids the following problem:

Camera's last shot was image #1325

The new CF has image #1350 on it (maybe borrowed CF from a friend).

If you started shooting at #1326, you'd very quickly approach #1350, and then have to either delete that image, or skip over it (making you wonder where the heck it came from).

So, the camera just starts at #1351, instead.
