OT: Laptops - What Are YOU Using?...

GOD, this is getting to be an EXPEN$IVE HOBBY!!!

Shopping a laptop now, for my photography/video/audio (and to use
in the field for my computer business too)...

Looked at that (should say, been OBSESSING on ) one from Toshiba,
5205 S705, with the cool anti-glare home theater cover on the
screen, but hell, $500 extra for a TV Tuner that I'm never going to
use? More into performance, screen size/resolution, storage,
network connectivity, and having firewire/usb2 for the cam, reader,
hard disk recorder, etc.

Looks like I'm going to end up with a Sony GRT (custom config).
16.1" UXGA screen, P4 2.8Ghz, 256MB RAM (I can get RAM alot cheeper
than Sony wants to sell it for later), 60GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD, 2 yr.
extended warranty - $ 2,219.

THANK GOD for TOLERANT WIVES (promised her a new G5 Mac for X-Mas).

What are you's'all guyz (that's how we say it in the south) using
in the field?

Happy 4th all!

Rick

Sony Laptop grz660
2ghz
512mb ram
40g hd
15" xvga screen

transfered about 3 sec per pic..........not bad for usb connection shooting mostly small fine pics in the camera

and enjoy the freedom the laptop gives me........ wireless connection to the internet within my home
Have a nice day

Real men show that they are bald:

Small size and weight, built-in DVD/CDRW drive, and a wide screen, (1280 x 786) screen that has a 1.66 : 1 aspect ratio.

It also has a couple of useless features for me, a camera, and a memory stick slot. Still, the size and screen are it's main selling points for me.
Actually, it seems that ALL new electronic gadgets contain cameras these days..)

Great machine! I've had mine for a year also. Do you have an
AirPort base station?
Yes - was using it for several months and then the connection started getting worse and went back to the regular connection. Turned out the buried phone line in the back yard was bad and by the time it was replaced, I forgot how to restart the use of the AirPort. I keep getting the request for the password and I forgot it!! I have tried erasing all of the AirPort files and reloading it, but that hasn't worked. Believe the file holding the password still exists. You wouldn't happen to know whick file that is, would you?

I have experienced a few different laptops over the last few years and After having decided on a dell I have never looked back.

The Latitude C840 is brilliant, the dimensions may seem large compared to some other L/T's available but its in perfect proportion and its comfortable. The great thing with Dell is that you can customise the L/T to your requirements online and see what the damage is going to be.

I will never even consider purchasing a different brand as I have never had a problem with the 3 Dell computers I own.

I forgot mine a while ago and Apple helped me get a new one. Give Them a call. As far as files go, there are a few airport folders in the utulities folder in applications. Sorry but I'm not that knowledgeable about airport. Verizon also gave me lots of good advice re: airport. Tom

Eyes are your brain sticking out of your head.

I got the $550 Averatec from Best Buy, very slim, lightweight (4lbs), good display, decent speed, slips into my LowePro minitrek in the front pocket. Works great for transferring pics and reviewing shots in the field. Modern design with no legacy serial or parallel ports (3 usb and 1 pcmcia).

It also has a couple of useless features for me, a camera, and a
memory stick slot. Still, the size and screen are it's main
selling points for me.
If it is the size and the screen that are the main selling points, then you should check out the Fujitsu-P series. They have the same number of pixels on the same size screen, and the computer is the same size and weight.

And, they are about $1000 less than the sony.

I have a 4074 3.06 With HT,
How well does it perform?

I'm thinking of buying one of the HT capable models as a desktop replacement. It'll be used mostly for video editing, photo editing, and surfing the net. I'm thinking the "HT" part of it will help when I want to do all three at the same time.

i got a compaq evo n1020 (2,4ghz 256 ram etc.) for free a short while back and the day i got the compaq i started missing my old toshiba 2550cdt with its strong build and good screen etc.etc. the new compaq feels so flimsy.

ive also used ibms, which also are of good quality, and i would probably buy an ibm if i would buy a new one today (since toshiba sieems to have started to sell allot less over here)
