Well , I would place quality as #1, value for the money etc... Well Canon is the safe haven and the Sigma is the pioneer. Thanks Sigma!

Julio,
I think people buy the name not necessarily the quality. Kudos Sigma.

Contax quit building their digital camera because it was overpriced just like the Canon and Nikon. Of course the Contax is a cult camera along with the Zeiss lens. The lens is fantastic. I have owned a Contax and Zeiss lens before and I regreted selling both. I now have a Nikon. I find the Sigma lens about as good as the Nikon or Canon. So if Contax is not going to build a digital camera, then the Sigma SD9 is my only choice and according to what I'm seeing on this web site it can be purchased for $999. I'll purchase from a local dealer that I can take it in if I have a problem.

If I felt Sigma/Foven were working on an improved design I would have chosen Sigma. Unfortunately I have seen nothing indicating any new improved models, so it feels like buying into a dead ended system. I love the way iso 100 images look on the sigma. Unfortunatly the camera has too many drawbacks, not the least of which is no upgrade path. With Canon/Nikon people feel safer buying into a system thay can grow with. I am in no way bashing the Sigma/Foven combo. It was a great first effort. Lets see the next generation, fixing the short comings and I will be a believer.

FYI, before I get nailed for not mentioning the short comings as I see it, they are:
1. Stupid 2 battery solution.
2. Dust (lets see if the 4/3 stem figures this out.. noone else has)

3. Color (color from the others in its class are much more natural to me.. brown greens ect.)
4. High iso performance

5. Lower lens selections. (not bashing Sigma lenses.. just the lack of alternatives)
6. Most important to me-No news of future improvements.

That being said, I think you all own a great camera and I hope I hear of a future foven camera before the fall when I will make the jump to DSLRs.

Valid... I would say however, that Sigma lenses are not going to die.. even if the SD9 is gone then we will welcome the 30MP version

1st choice would be to advertise for a rich girlfriend.

2nd choice would be SD-9 with 28--70, 70--200, & 170--500 lenses, filters & hoods; lots of batteries, & a portable storage device with 40 or more GB.

I'll actually have to make this choice in the end of August, & I'm having a tough time waiting. I'm also desperately looking for a rich woman now so I can narrow the choices down. ;-)~

I'm not sure how anyone can deal with dust though in a system where the user can replace the lens. I think the only real solution is some of of nano-cleaning robots that hang around inside the camera and go to work after you seat a lens.

Until then though, a dust protector like Sigma has is probably as good as it's going to get. The only improvement there would probably be a tighter seal, one screw seems a little weak to me to hold back all dust.

Does anyone have any other thoughts about good ways for cameras to deal with errant dust? Perhaps replaceable dryer sheet linings inside the camera. :-)

A friend of mine and I have thought about the dust problem, and we have entertained ideas about a mechanism coupled with the lens mount that would use some type of curtain or interlock that would seal the interior from the outside when the lens was removed. As soon as the lens is attached and turned into place, the curtain would slide away. It would even be more effective in conjunction with a positive pressure system or filtration.

While us 'end users' have no information about future designs, I would expect that a major corporation like Sigma has some serious R&D under way as I type. From what I've read, Sigma is a major lens manufacturer and if what I read is correct, they make more lenses than all other lens manufacturers combined. I just don't see them entering the DSLR market without some future vision. I'm sure they are aware of how rapidly other manufacturers update their models and I would expect that in 18-24 months we'll see a new Sigma/Foveon back. Until then, I'm getting a lot of great shots with m SD9!
