Hi,

I received my brand new 16-50mm S lens today and it have some little dust inside the lens element in the middle and a big one (not sure it's a dust) to the edge.
It's visible when looking into the lens when holding it up to the light.

Is this a common occurrence ?

The white dot looks like it is on the front of the lens?

No, not for such an expensive lens.

Get a replacement.

This should never happen when a company is trying to enter the Pro photography marketplace.

Let Samsung know.

The white dot is inside the lens, a white circle, it's odd.

Are you sure the white dot is dust? If so, it is a remarkably perfect circle. It seems to be on the rubber seal and perfectly centered in relation to the thickness of the seal. Perhaps it is an alignment dot for placement of the seal.

It's definitely not dust, it's a perfect circle indeed.

Don't have this on mine. Seems like a definite QC issue. But can it be seen on an image when shooting full width? I'd do an exchange if it's an easy one with a local retailer. It's hard to say if this is "stuck" to the lens and will stay put, or if it's "lose" and just temporarily stuck there. If the latter, sooner or later it's going to be a real problem

If a lens is reasonably sharp and focuses well, I would Not return it.

Even if it had a piece of dust.

You might get a perfect lens in its place less sharp and accurate.

I will get my NX1 soon so i will test the lens before i decide to return it or not, but is this going to kill the price I'd get if one day i want to sell it ?

Considering that this lens is sealed, imo there could be two causes:
1) dust went inside during building process
2) the sealing is not working fine

The first is less probable, considering how clean are the rooms where they build lenses.

For your money spent return it for a Pristine one.

There are no other options.

I wonder how can you possible explain point 2. in any reasonable way considering that these lens is brand new?

Very reasonable: He found an Unexpected, Out of the Blue, way to throw jab at Samsung.

I used my 16-50mm during two weeks now and even if the dust is not visible on my photo/video, there is more particules and dust inside the lens than before.

Did you guys see some dust or particules inside your lens too or the sealing of my lens doesn't work as expected ?

You should have returned it immediately for replacement when you first discovered the issue. Seems like the lens is not properly sealed.

My replaced 16-50 S got dust after some days of use(I precise that in order to see the dust, i must place the lens in front of bright light).
I take care of my lenses and i zoom in and out slowly so i think the 16-50mm S takes dust very easily.
My other extending zoom lenses (lumix 14-45mm, 100-300mm and 12-35mm) don't have much dust after few years ...
I hope my future 50-150mm will be better sealed (i hope since the lens has an internal zoom).

Dust won't impact picture quality and is totally normal. The only place you will notice it is in out of focus specular highlights (like out of focus christmas lights) it will make little dark spots in those.

Otherwise it only serves to reduce the aperture of the lens by the relative area of the dust to the size of the element (virtually no effect).

A lot of people worry about dust, but as long as there isn't fungus or large amounts of dust (like enough to make a film) it is fine.

Sealed lenses tend to be as bad or worse for dust, especially if there is any in the camera body, since it wants to direct airflow inside the lens and camera body, especially a lens like the 16-50mm which extends. When I shot Pentax, a lens like a Pentax DA* 60-250mm f/4 which is weather sealed and extends was really bad for dust, especially when I used it on an old dirty film body with deteriorating foam light seals. It took the debris from the body and circulated it into the lens. A non weather sealed lens probably would have pulled in cleaner outside air.

Thanks for your reply, i will try to stop to watch inside the lens too often now ;-).

It is good you returned it, not that dust is bad, but the big one of the side does not look normal.

As for dust entering the lens, it seems it is unavoidable even though it is sealed, and for normal dust specks I don't even worry, every single lens Ive bought new with the exception of my 16-50s had at least one speck of dust inside, and I suspect my 16-50s will get dust in it eventually, I used to worry about it, but Ive realised lenses will get dust inside.

Btw I previously owned the Sony 16-50 f2.8, (which supposedly was dust resistant) I bought two copies and both had dust inside.

Thanks for your message. Yes i returned the first lens cause of the white thing on the side, it was here the first day i opened the box.

Do you see some dust in your 16-50 S in bright light too ?

Hmm, when I used a flash light, I thought I saw a dust spot but it wasn't there when I looked again a few days later, so it is possible I have one and I see it depending on the angle of light.

I will get them eventually, and I have an 85mm 1.4 that had quite a few after I purchased it brand new from amazon.
