And 40MP shooting is meant to be done with tripod only (as already assumed here by me and others).

Yeah, I saw that, and it's a disappointment. I had hoped else. I want more resolution for my architectural shots. Now I have to wait for a new sensor in the E-M1 II, maybe. The idea with a m43 camera is that it's small. If I'm going to carry around a tripod it isn't a small package anymore. Maybe I should get a A7r instead. But I love my 12-40/2,8. Grrr.

Yes, I assume the 40mp sensor shift trick would be a tripod only thing, but was hoping some surprising ultrasonic sensor shifting technology is being used where many 8 cycle composites are being merged. This would make an iso 200 behave like iso 25 plus all the other advantages of high resolution and low noise.

Interesting. Well, I'm glad I didn't wait and went for a cheaper used E-M1. I still think that small grip with narrowing edges design is poor for anything but pancake lenses. The little thumb grip area is a nice addition. It could be more like GX7 or more toward E-M1. I wonder when E-M1 II might be released--probably another year?

I was just reading how the Olympus medical cameras do this. Apparently they use a smaller CCD sensor in which the whole sensors can be read at one time instead of line by line. IIRC, the old E-M5 sensor can only be read in 1/10th of second. The GH4 sensor is faster and might only take 1/15th of a second. In order for this to work optimally Olympus will need a global shutter or a sensor which can be read in 1/80th of second or faster, and even then it would take 1/10th of second to take a picture - fast enough for IBIS to be used. I read Panasonic is working on a sensor like that, but at this time it does not exist.

I didn't see any details about the 40MP feature other than that it utilzies 1/2 pixel sensor movements. On what basis are you concluding that this means tripod-only shooting?

Also wondering what the HDR button does (by default).

Yeap, not before next year I'm afraid.

I use my E-M5 in -30C weather regularly and other than battery life, its suffered no ill effects so not sure what freeze resistant actually means...

"It's weather (freeze) resistant"

I certainly would NOT depend upon that statement; as oft-quoted here, no company is actually willing to back that statement with any form of guaranteed servicing if said "weatherproofing" should fail within the warranty period. It is strictly an 'At Your Own Risk", cross-your-fingers promise - and promises fade in the wind faster than a bad smell.

Yes...

But...

Usually what happens is this - they BUILT it rugged, and it is SUPPOSED to withstand that, BUT if it won't... it's your problem. I doubt if you go to Olympus with an EM1 that failed to survive rain or snow and ask for warranty they will fix it. they are more likely to say something like "you didnt treat the camera right which is why weather sealing broke"

This one managed to get Olympus to cover it:

Also worth reading:

note the phrase "Splash proof" - not saying much of a promise, that. Lots of people have had good fortune whilst testing the "rugged" claims of many a camera while others...not so much. And then you must fight to have the company honor your beliefs of what they "promised", but finding loopholes in their legaleze is their specialty; one slip of a seal, one excess pressure across a surface, and "This is not covered" is a quick reply. Trust me, while I managed a photo shop Nikon even pulled that with Nikonos products, a camera marketed to the "waterproof" functionality.

In most of the instances were I want higher resolution, using a tripod is not a big disadvantage. I'm looking forward to using it for landscape photography. For most other work, 16mp is just fine.

However, I assume this won't be useful for flash photography, even on a tripod, as you would need 8 flash bursts to capture the 40mp image. That would mean only continuous lights for product photography, which sort of sucks.

Fortunately!

Except that you can actually do it with your E-M1 (or any other) already - without tripod - with higher MP count and better quality (+ RAW) => using existing PC software.

I can also do composite images for long exposure with any camera, but Live Composite makes it practical without having to spend hours in post.
