M8 seems to best current cameras in B+W = wrong?

https://flic.kr/s/aHsk4oqHqj

I went for a walk today to buy some coffee beans and took the M8 with me. If anyone is interested here's some of the shots from the walk, just messing.
with respect, although i was surprised and doubtful of your claim about the M8 and newer cameras, i didnt comment as i wasnt too sure if you were correct or not.

i have just been on flikr to see the shots you have put up to help cement your claim, and although my pc doesnt seem to like flikr and i couldnt view them in large size, from what i can see from the small versions, i would respectfully suggest either withdrawing your claim or post some shots that help your claim.

leaving all other considerations aside, the sheer amount of noise in some of the shots is dreadful when considering the ISO capabilities of some modern cameras, and as for the tones, this can be dialed in on most shots in PP. i cant tell what ISO you shot these at but my camera at ISO 6400 would wipe the floor with these shots.

please dont think i am one of the `leica bashers` that like to come on this forum and stir the sh*t, i personally love this forum and am a big leica fan, but i also think i keep my feet on the ground when comparing shots and the few cameras i can speak about.

from what i have seen on here recently i would say the new d-lux is more preferable for b&w.

please feel free to post some shots that will make my argument look silly.

`im a simple man, i use simple tools, and i shoot what i see` L S Lowry (but bastardised by me).
He has used VSCO and added "film grain" Paul, that is why they look like this.

i couldnt see this as flikr hates my pc, but if one is claiming that a chosen camera is sharper than everything else, why would you then post shots with added grain??

it makes no sense at all, surely one would post sharper shots that any modern camera could produce.
Artistic license I guess...

Yeah, those are some images just messing about, as I said in the post. They're not intended as 'evidence', only for the curious.

I can post a Leica vs Fuji comparison shot if anyone is interested.

Thanks, I would be interested, because my own experience with Fuji cameras and good lenses is that they can produce cery good results.

An example with an X-pro1 and a summicron 50 (ignore the exif I forgot to change the focal length):

(Please see at 100% otherwise dpreview messes up the IQ)

Fujis are very nice. But the M8 is a truly great camera--I don't even have one, so this is not defensive. Spend some time on Flickr and see what it can do,if you are curious. If you are happy now, just be happy. :)

There is nearly always something better in some way than what we have.

yes I have had much better luck photographing with the M8 in black and white than any of the special colors of m8 cameras.

I used to have an M8.... It was actually my first Leica rangefinder.... But, I would still be interested to see the comparisons. I am just showing what I can show now.

Always happy!

Agreed.

My 2 cent:

My main reason to collect a M8.2 was of course the outstanding image quality and the fun of using a rangefinder.

I sold sometime ago all My Leica stuff (M240 and 50mm APO a 1.4 50mm lux ASPH and a few more lenses) to move to Sony A7.

Although IQ of the A7 is also outstanding, (I use the A7 with a few prime lenses, e.g. 55f1.8 and the 70-200G) I was missing the M feeling.

But I was not anymore prepared to walk around with a 10k€ gear kit. Leaving it in my hotel room was putting me always in a uncomfortable position, although my gear was insured against theft etc....

Therefore I made a kind of a compromise, bought a mint M8.2 and use this with a 40mm Summicron-C that I anyway had in my cupboard.

This kit, worth about 1700 Euro is now being used together with my A7. But now I have the comfort of using zoom, low light etc. with my A7 if needed and of course the incredible B&W features of the M8.2.

The M8.2 is a real nice camera. It is real fun using it! I do not know why this is the case, but it is the case for me for sure.

I do not want to upgrade to an M9 or MM due to the recently reported problems of sensor degradation. I do not want to sent in my Camera to Wetzlar every year, and have to wait 2 months before it gets back with a new sensor. The M8 does not have this M9 sensor problem!

M240 is too expensive for me, so the choice was an easy one for me, and I have been lucky to find a mint chrome M8.2 from a nice fellow in the Netherlands.

I hope that the M8.2 will stay healthy and that I will use it a lot for just making fun pics (I'm not making pictures to sell them)

The M8 is not only good for BW , but also the colors have a more natural pleasant starting point ....

The problem this camera has , as always mentioned is the extreme sensitivity about IR for the particular design .... but it also allows for a great rendering ... we are not talking about resolution as the M8 has only 10MP ...but the acuity of every pixels is perfect and the rendering is simply beautiful and natural with no artifacts .

(Of course for serious colors works you need an IR Filter)

As others have mentioned also the M9 can't touch the M8 in this ... the M9 was designed to use full frame and avoid the iR problem , hence the "directness" of the M8 was newly designed in order to achieve this .

Over 320 and up the M8 also maintains more DR than the M9 that only gains something in noise suppression....

Try to shot an M8 at 1250 iso in full sun (a plenty of light scene ) , then look at some texture , and you will understand this camera has no tricks inside .

It's a very sensible tool , and less forgiving than the M9 in some way .... but when you get it right , it's a fantastic image-making .

Difficult to understand if someone has never used it extensively ... but it's the real truth .

It's really outstanding how a 2006 camera is always a benchmark nowadays !!

Long life M8 !! ;)
