I currently have a Panasonic LX7 (2 years old, not very happy with it) and am considering stepping up to SLR. I've noticed that when a new model gets released, the older model(s) seem to have the best value deals, so I might try waiting another month or two until the 750D arrives and see if I can pick up a 650D or 700D on the cheap. Is that reasonable to assume?

However Nikon is also a player, so I would like to know in which order you would rate these cameras:

Canon: 600D; 650D; 700D

Nikon: D5100; D5200; D5300

Feel free to give an Explanation as to which order you'd choose. i.e. would you prefer the D5300 to the 700D?
Would you prefer the 650D to the D5200?

What do you typically photograph, and why are you unhappy with the LX7? Need to know these things, because recommending a DSLR may not solve your problems.

Typically landscapes, expecting a first child soon so I guess Portraits will come in to Play too. Bit of macro here and there too.

I've had to get the LX7 repaired once already and have started to see a different Screen Problem Pop up occasionally. The Time Lapse function on the LX7 is a joke (Minimum 1 Minute between shots). I would like to get the Background fade/depth of field much deeper which is only really possible with a SLR sensor size afaik. Night shots I've found have typically been pretty horrible with the LX7 despite its bright lens (F1.4) - noisy and a lack of Detail. Slow zoom annoying too.

I suppose I should consider getting something second Hand too, which again might be more available once the 750D comes out and people want to upgrade.

Canon sensor is smaller and outdated. Even smaller sensors caught it (like the four thirds of 16 M).
Thus the dynamic range and high ISO performance is lower than that of Nikon.
Apart from the sensor the bodies are equivalent. Canon is slightly better for video while Nikon is noticeably better for stills in difficult conditions.
Go to a store and play with them as how you like using the camera is a very important factor. I would get also an external flash that can swivel and tilt. Nikon flash system is better but you can get good results with both systems.

A used or refurbished Nikon D7000 may be a better option then the DSLR's you have listed. An even better selection would be the D7100. Especially for low light indoor shots although the others would suffice. Which ever camera you buy look at their budget lenses like a 35mm or 50mm which would work fine indoors chasing kids. You can also pick up some deals on used lenses either at B&H, Adorama, or KEH all are very reputable sellers. I picked up a used Canon 60D with 18-135mm lens for $550 with less than 2500 shutter actuations a couple of months ago.

USED: D7000 D7100

The Canon models will have better "IQ" image quality, AF autofocusing, lens selection, etc

yes, the older models can offer better value

Don't know about the image quality of the sensors, one vs. the other, but the Nikon system has a 35mm f/1.8 prime lens for less that $200. It would be pretty much equivalent to the fast kit lenses that used to come with film cameras. It would be perfect for chasing around the little one indoors, IMO.

As far as I can tell, that combination of price, speed, and equivalent lens length is unique to this one lens from Nikon, although I'd be interested in hearing about other similar lenses.
