I would not say I am the most skilled photographer. Far from it. I have owned in the past the Canon g15 , Rx100 and currenty am using the the s100 canon.

I live in st Petersburg Fl and have used my cameras mostly for landscapes, on the beach and off.

I have been lurking in this forum for the past year. The DP1X intrigues me! Everyone simply raves about the IQ. I am very patient and dont think write times would bother me.

I guess I'm asking now that the DP1X can be had in the $200 range is the IQ really that good and is there a large adjustment based on what I'm used to. I wish I could afford the DP1 Merrill but it's simply out of my reach at this point.

Thanks in advance for your responses!.......and patience.....

Hi.

The DP1 - no frills - was the first Σ camera I ever had. I enjoyed it immensely immediately. I then got the DP2, and did the same with that. Now I have the SD1M, and... (you can guess).

If you can't afford a Merrill version, and are prepared to put up with its limitations (fixed lens, needs good light, etc.) then I'll eat my hat if you find any other faults with it.

For output, it fills my 24 inch screen very attractively. I don't get prints done, but I've heard they're good for that size at least. (If you can find my gallery here you can see the image Q for yourself - not the picture Q necessarily :| .

Enjoy the DP1X (in advance).

I have no experience with the DP1X but have used a DP2X since 2011 and have been very pleased with it. I just purchased a DP2M this week but I am not yet ready to quit using the DP2X.

The tiny Dp1x is my favorite camera of all time. For landscapes, just set Hyperfocal to 1.5m, 2m, 3m & 4m (for F/11, 8, 5.6 & 4 respectively, and DONE, the superb 16mm optics do the rest! Best camera control interface ever, and fantastic monochrome tonality.

It's not a point n' shoot street shooter, she needs a tripod. Skip ISO 50, unless heavy overcast, or to slow shutter for dreamy water movement, but highlight will clip sooner. Shoot her at ISO 100, or 200 max (unless monochome, then maybe 400). To protect highlights in JPEGs, choose Neutral color mode.

DP1x RAW files are supported by Adobe Camera Raw providing direct workflow in Lightroom and other Adobe apps, a feature which alone makes her one of Sigma best cameras ever. Also got myself a DP2S, even sharper, but I love the 28mm equiv. focal length, especially for exaggerating perspective.

I sold my SD1M, because no Adobe workflow. Have a DP2Q for research purposes, but no Adobe workflow. My D800 gets use for handheld, but my little black ponies remain my favorite cameras.

You can't go wrong, and may wish to post a WTB ad across a few sites starting at $100, as their may be photographers wanting to ensure their old DP's go to a thoughtful owner, rather than a used camera clearinghouse.

Don't be fooled, you can print with exquisite detail to 13"x19" with these 4.7MP gems.. Sigma's best cameras to date IMHO.

It's the REAL Foveon deal!

Best wishes,

You will get much enjoyment out of it. I still pull them out regulary (1X & 2X) Battery life is so-so but better than the M line. Size is small enough that you can just carry it in your pocket. It has the MF wheel in the back so you are not turning the lens enabling you to focus with your thumb while you hold it to shoot. I like the color of the X models. The lens is sharp across the plane out to the edges. Here are two shots. One is ISO800 but keep in mind that this was not in low light. The 2nd is a landscape. It has a very weak flash but the M and Q do not have flash.

Thank you all for your responses. The clarity of your photos is incredible.

What do you think is a fair price to pay for a used dp1x?

+/- 200, but you can still get a new one for 299 euro @ amazon France.

I got my for 309 euro some time back and its still my favorite Sigma while travelling or going out or to work; always in the bag

MarekL's response is a good one. I don't remember what Sigma's warranty is off-hand but you may want to consider a new one. I know that USA has no more new and no more refurbished DP2X bodies. I don't know about the 1X. I don't even know if they still repair them and that would be a good question to ask when buying a new one. And also if they don't or can't repair the camera and it is still under warranty, what are the options.

Just make some research on the Web.

You still can get brand new for $349 on Amazon or used on E-bay in 140-250 dollars range.

I own one and this is my second after original DP1 broke. And I like it much regardless of incredibly slow autofocus and writing to the card.

Im no pro too and im probably at the base level of amateur if there was a scale of it. Been in love with the Sigmas and I have owned the DP2 and DP1s and another Dp1s for the last 3 years. (bought all of them used from a member here). anyway. ITs a great little camera that i'm sure you will love IQ wise. My only complaint is that its not the best when it comes to shooting sunsets. I dont like how it handles the sun and it is blown everytime. Something I hope can be addressed soon or for me to understand how to workaround.

Check out my blog down in my sig, plenty of Beach photos there when i took the cameras with me to trip.

Oh and lastly, the camera used is a Dp1s not a Dp1x but i reckon the changes are very minimal.

It's about equivalent to a 12 MP camera from any other company, but it does give greater dynamic range than most of the older cameras that you can buy for $200, such as a Canon 40 D or a Nikon D200. (Those won't give you the same image quality anyway.) It will produce images as good as a Canon 5 D with a wide-angle prime L lens on it or a Nikon D700 with a similar quality lens. Both of those are high-quality 12 MP cameras with full-frame sensors. Of course, the 16 MP Sony A55, which you can get for about $300 now is able to beat the old Sigmas for pure resolution (slightly more detail is visible in photos from a typical 15 MP or 16 MP camera, like a Sony A55 or Nikon D5100), and match them for dynamic range, but the green colors from the Sony and other cameras don't always look real, which is one reason I prefer the Sigma cameras, with their Foveon sensors.

Certainly at $200 the old Sigmas are a good buy and able to provide excellent quality images in a compact package, with a good quality lens included in the $200 price. I'd say, "Go for it!"
