I have a new Nikon D750 and am having a terribly frustrating problem with it. I get a dark black line (like severe vignetting) on the bottom of images when I shoot in landscape. It is present when I shoot straight on the subject or if I shoot at an angle up. It is not present if I shoot below the camera (example standing, taking photo of the ground). When I hold the camera in portrait position, it is not there. This problem is present across different camera settings/ modes and lenses. I can see the dark line in live view. I am afraid it may be a mirror issue because I am unable to shoot in mirror up mode. Help please!!! (many, many thanks!)

Contact Nikon customer support. The camera needs servicing.

where did you buy it? Can you return it?

Forget the camera. That's an awesome buck. Congrats.

Yeah , that doesn't look right.

On a side note, that is what heck of a buck! I live in Mass, and there is NO way a deer will ever get that big.

It looks like the mirror not retracting correctly. Needs service or replacement

Does it happen when you don't use the flash?

It looks like a problem of synchronization at a too high shooting time (even if the exif report 1/200), strange.

+1. Try to shoot without the flash and see what will happen.

Thanks everyone. I am so disappointed. I bought the camera from an on-line vendor and it is an "import model" (gray market camera) I understand the implications of being unable to get USA Nikon service. They sold me an extended 3 year warranty through their company. :(

Yes, the deer grow big around here! (Iowa)

I have tried flash, no flash, external flash, manual, auto, different lenses....

Its a duff camera. Any Nikon camera if you point and shoot it at an average scene will never come up with an image like this unless it has a problem. We don't pay this much money to get a problem like this. Return it or send it to Nikon.

Your analysis is excluding much of the information provided by the image. If it were a flash shadowing problem, it would only result in a slightly darker exposure at the bottom of the frame; the image would not be completely black there. Observe that there is sufficient ambient lighting to illuminate the background quite well, so it is also sufficient as the sole light source and any flash would provide fill-in only.

The OP's camera has a mechanical malfunction of the mirror-control mechanism - possibly a broken spring or similar. It should be returned for exchange, or sent for warranty service.

Let's hope they'll honor the warranty. Please do let us know of the outcome - good or bad - as it may help other potential buyers of a grey market camera.

Does that store have a return policy ?

How much cash did you save by purchasing a gray market D750? I'm sure you know Nikon will not touch it even you wanted to pay for the repair. Let us know how you make out and who is going to repair it. Also, is the online shop where you purchased the D750 listed on Nikon's Authorized Dealers list? Hope so, see link: http://cdn-6.nikon-cdn.com/where-to-buy/nikon_img_auth_dealers.pdf

It appears something in the mechanism isn't opening all the way. Gravity is helping move it when you point the camera down which suggests a spring is missing, came off or is broken. You can check it out by taking the lens off and putting the camera into mirror up cleaning mode. In that mode you should be able to see what is blocking the sensor path and see why tilting it down clears the path. If you are real lucky you will see something you can easily reattach yourself. Otherwise, time to exercise that 3 year warranty.

Hi Daniel

Good answer.

I purchased the camera from a highly rated eBay vendor with a physical store in NJ. It is called Deaslallyear.com I saved approximately $500 by purchasing the gray market model. They were honest about the camera being gray market. Looks like this was a gamble not worth taking. They do have a return policy, which I am outside the window. So far their communication has been great, I pray their service is good as well. I will keep everyone posted. I very much appreciate all of the input.

Thank you Daniel, I will have another peek inside. Your analysis is excellent and appreciated. I do believe the issue is with the mirror mechanism. The camera cannot take a photo in M-up mode. Thanks!
