Last December, I attended a Bird Photography Workshop with Greg Downing at Bosque de Apache in New Mexico. It was great. I learned a ton of stuff. Two months later, I went to Alaska on a tour to photograph Bald Eagles.

Naturally, afterwards I showed some of the images to Greg for critiquing. (Isn't that part of the reason why people attend these workshops in the first place? To get to know the instructor so that you can ask them things later.)

Well, he really liked some of them and got interested in where and when since, although he's been all over photographing birds, he's never had the opportunity to photograph Bald Eagles. About a month later, he came back to me and asked if he could use a few of my images as samples for an upcoming workshop he was planning with another well known bird photographer, E.J. Peiker.

Well, after striking up a deal, he's now displaying my images with his! And so is E.J.! Ok, so it's only on the web but it's still the first time ANYONE has asked to use one of my images.

Here's the link to the site:
http://www.gdphotography.com/workshops.htm
then click on the Homer, AK workshop.

BTW, part of the deal is that I get to go to Alaska again next February and I get to attend the workshop with both of them together. Only 7 months to go and I can't wait.

Here's some more samples that he didn't use:

Hi Tony:

I don't know how you were able to summon up so much gee whiz modesty about having your pictures selected for the professional seminar web site. Speaking, I am sure, on behalf of your fellow DP Review forum colleagues I can tell you why this has happened to you. Your eagle pictures were stunning. They are tack sharp. The angles and up close and personal vantage points are astonishing. And your post processing editing work was superb. What's not to like?

Wait until you get back to Alaska and the pros are following you around to find out just where you were when you took those fantastic shots.

Congratulations. I'm glad we all knew you when you were just "Tony" -- before you became a nationally known artiste.

Some years ago I was hired by a Texas ad agency to fly to Oregon where a bird trainer had some eagles.

They needed a set of pictures of eagles for their ads and logos... I spent three days with trianed eagles and literally DID NOT GET what I felt was one really good photo...

So, I know how hard it is. The problem was partly due to the equipment. Auto focus lenses had not been invented yet... and they had some particular angles they wanted... which made it really difficult.

But, you have done a great job here... makes me want another try.

congrats!...those are awesome shots

Anthony,

Both your Bosque pictures and your Eagle photos were Fantastic. I don't think you mentioned you had just attended a workshop when you published them, but I could certainly see a quantum leap for you.

These are easily marketable photos and I'm not surprised the other guys are bringing you along. You are obviously a shining student.

Congratulations,

Paul

Very good photographs (!) and I have a couple questions.

1. What lens did you use? You got so close to the birds while maintaining sharpness that I suspect you used a very long lens.

2. I would guess the first shot (see below) was taken in sunlight because of the shadows I see on the birds head/neck. But the sky looks a lot darker than I would expect in sunlight. Did you do anything to change the sky?

You've got talent.

I have a Nikon D1H and D100, I was using both in Alaska.

The main three lenses were a Nikon 180mm AFD, 300mm F4.0 AFS and 500mm F4.0 AFS. I also had a TC14EII and TC20EII. Just as many of the good shots were taken by the 300mm as by the 500mm. And the head shot was taken by the 180mm.

Next year, it will be an even trade off between the 500 and the 70-200 VR!

I don't remember off the top of my head and I'm not on the computer that has the originals but I'll look it up later and get back to you.

What did you think of the images he posted here?

Agreed, 100%. Your eagle photos are fantastic!

I'm surprised on the ones he chose for the website. I like the 2 last ones here better than the one he chose. Hmmm...wonder why?

Sure would be tempting to sign up. Wow! I think I have to work my fingers to the bone saving up $ for workshops, airflights, and new lenses! Think someone with a 70-200 and a 1.4 tc could get anything?

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS! You deserve it!

Way to go Tony. I always thought your photos were equal or better than almost all the naturephotograghy images - I see you are gaining acceptance there as well - beyond Greg.

Just remember us little guys once you are famous and if you feel like a side trip to beautiful vancouver island let me know!

1. What lens did you use? You got so close to the birds while

The image below was taken with a 300mm F4.0 AFS lens. I cut off the right wing so I cropped the image so that both wings were cropped. I think the eagle would have fit in frame had I not chopped off that wing.

anything to change the sky?
The background sky is a cloud being partially illuminated by the low angle of the sun. When I brought up the saturation some, it made the cloud look slightly more blue than it had in the original, unmodified image.
