I was sitting across from my girlfriend with the 85/1.8G shooting from about 3.5 feet away, which works out to a DOF less than 1" (by some measures closer to 1/2"):24 1.4G, 85 1.4D and 200vr 2 about a 5% hit rate on all compared to 95% on the D3.
Am I reading this correctly? You are pleased the lens can focus at f/2.8? I should flippin' hope so the amount of money the camera and lens costs. The test is f/1.4 to f/2, and the D810 is much improved, try it.I was sitting across from my girlfriend with the 85/1.8G shooting from about 3.5 feet away, which works out to a DOF less than 1" (by some measures closer to 1/2"):24 1.4G, 85 1.4D and 200vr 2 about a 5% hit rate on all compared to 95% on the D3.

Resized to 58% to match 12 MP at 100%.
As far as I'm concerned getting any of the eyelash in-focus is a hit given how difficult it is to focus on one eye, especially when dealing with such a narrow DOF. I suppose YMMV; not sure if we are operating under different standards, different camera settings, or if my D800 just does better than yours.
I hope your D810 brings you satisfaction.
I am pleased that the camera can nail the focus to within half an inch.Am I reading this correctly? I've done f/2 too and the hit rate is about the same. As I said, with such a narrow DOF just hitting part of the eyelash is all you can hope for. Further away and the DOF is greater, and the hit rate would be comparable even if I did narrow the DOF to where only one eye and a small portion of the face is in-focus.I should flippin' hope so the amount of money the camera and lens costs. The test is f/1.4 to f/2, and the D810 is much improved, try it.
[/QUOTE]You will be replaced with a nice and shiny new D810 which hopefully will focus with fast glass!
My daughter holding it for the very last time, emotional times...

Who told you this is the right way to hold the camera?... This is what I was hearing many times... Many "modern" highly paid photographers hold cameras different ways and "explain" why... "Whateva works"!!! I was bitten so many times for telling people how to hold it right and why classic way suggesting putting your left palm under and not over the lens... Just ridiculous...Yeh, I would keep the camera and let her use it. She has talent. I can tell by the way she holds the camera.
Three weeks ago I have done a portrait shoot with my new Sigma 50/1.4 Art on my D800E all wide open in the old town of Havanna. You will be replaced with a nice and shiny new D810 which hopefully will focus with fast glass!
