I much prefer the vertical because the boats in the foreground provide a subject and a sense of perspective. The horizontal composition has a kind of void at the centre and nothing leading the eye into the image.

Neither.

The top photo is fine, but it's about the clouds.....except the distortion of the village distracts my eye from them.

The second photo is not only cropped too tight - I want more space in for foreground - but the heroes of the shot are the boats, except they're competing with the clouds for my attention.

If I were to pick a favourite from the two, it would be the top one (but it still needs work.) The bottom shot is just annoying. :D

These are 2 different shots taken from 2 different spots and, probably, with 2 different FLs. Select one you like more, and trash the second.

Horizontal works better for me. There is a lot going on here maybe too much. The beautiful clouds, the wide harbor panorama, the boats. and the bordering trees. To my eye it should be about the wide harbor accentuated but not overwhelmed by the clouds. The distortion also needs fixing. You could start over but the clouds would be gone and that would be ok too, just different.

Seems i'm getting backwards, again trying to include everything in photo. What looks good to the eyes will look messy in photo :) It's close to me, i'll go again once weather will be good and try to compose better, focus on one thing.

Two very different compositions emphasizing two very different stories. They are both good.

Vertical

I like the square crop. The square seems to set off the angles of the boat line, the hillside and the clouds. Tells a story to me.

The horizontal one doesn't have any kind of composition or something special, drawing the attention.

The vertical one has lines, forming a zig-zag going upwards. A nice composition overall.

This one really works well in my opinion.

In fact, I like this crop better. It includes the whole cloud, which I believe is beautiful.

I like it better than my square crop. It forms a much better composition.

Sort of like a medium format frame (5x4).

Indeed. Although, still is a bit cramped on the bottom. The closest boat is simply too close to the border. More room would have been phenomenal.

It's f unny, I was thinking the same thing and then opened your post. I wish there was a bit wider crop available to catch the line of the clouds on the sky.
