How do I do an opacity gradient in PS? Example: I have two photos on two different layers. I want the top photo to have 100% opacity on the left side, but just 10% opacity on the right side, so that the layer underneath shows through.

I have tried gradient layers but I m ust not know how to use them, because all I get is a colored or grey layer, and I cannot apply that gradient to the photo layers.

Mike
put a mask on the top layer and a gradient in the mask

I think you should use the black to white graident if I follow what your trying to achieve. You can play with where you want to start and where you want to end as many times as you like. First thing tho is to do what fievel said.

To get 100% to 10%:
Do what the other two guys said then either:

1. Change the canvas size by making it 10% wider on the right side, so you can use the 100% Foreground to 100% Background gradient-then recrop the picture afterwards.

2. Create a new gradient that goes from 100% Foreground (Black) to 10% Foreground (Black).

3. Use the 100% Foreground (Black) to 100% Background (White), but redefine the Background from White to 10% Black.

I tried these things but all I got was a black to white mask on top of my top image. I could change the opacity of the mask but if I change to opacity of the underlying image layer, then the background layer shows up, but not in any kind of gradient.

I think I am missing something very basic. Ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Mike

1. Start with bottom image in background layer (layer 1)
2. Paste image you want to fade in layer above (layer 2).
3. Select layer 2 in layer window: menu-> layer/add layer mask/reveal all
4. Click on the white box on the right on layer 2 (layer box)
5. Choose Gradient tool-choose list in Gradient selector
6. Choose Foreground to Background
7. Drag Gradient to achieve ideal effect
8. Ask for help again in DPreview-lol j/k

Good Luck!
