whats your favorite travel camera??

You can save on both bulk and weight with a 4/3 camera like the ones from Olympus and Panasonic which can use the same lenses. There are very light and small f4.5~f5.6 versions and also a few f2.8 ones that are larger but still compact relatively speaking, like the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 which is the equivalent in terms of picture angle of a full frame 24-80mm f2.8 lens.

The primary drawback is the lack of in-lens optical stabilization
Panasonic makes many lenses with in-lens optical stabilization. Those lenses are usable on all Olympus, Panasonic and Kodak m4/3 cameras.
and with no viewfinder
All Olympus (and I think Panasonic) cameras have either a built in viewfinder or an optional attachable viewfinder-both optical and electronic.
there can be more camera movement as you cannot brace them against your body when shooting.
See above.
There are a couple models with electronic viewfinders but these also have their drawbacks.
Like what?
The picture quality from these small cameras is excellent when used within their limitations. I did a trip to Yellowstone with my wife who has the Olympus Pen 5 camera and was using a 150-300 (FF 300-600) lens and of our group her shots of a coyote hunting rodents in a distant field were the best ones of the day.

.....Seriously though I take my Nikon 1 V2 c/w 6.7-13 and 10-100mm lenses travelling. Last year many people will remember I loaded everything into a waterproof Pelican case and kayaked 120 miles down the east coast of the Baja Peninsula (http://www.pbase.com/windancer/baja) IMO it all worked very well and I have many good shots, this is just my own opinion and others may differ.

To the OP: Definitely micro-4/3. I recommend Olympus EP/L/M-x body of any kind and pairs of lenses such as 14 2.5 Panny/17 1.8 Oly/20 1.7 AND 45 Oly 1.8. I also endorse Tedolph's 40mm M Rokkor-C, adapted to an EPL-1. I used this lens for nearly forty years, most recently on the EPL-1.

starting a new job that will involve fair amount of travel. own a 5D3 but not sure how often will be able to carry along? curious your thoughts on a good option for those times ill have an oppty to do some shooting while on the road??

thanks!!
You will get plenty of replies on this topic! :)

My own personal travel camera is a Pentax K50, this camera is weather resistant and offers much in the way of built-in filters and lens compatibility. When traveling, one does not know what kind of weather conditions you will face, so I find a WR camera a must.

Just my 2 cents!

First of all, great shots for all who posted! Very convincing for "your" camera.

I can live without a pocket camera and after many years of Canon's, I bought a Panasonic FZ 150 with hopes it would fill the bill. I got some OK shots with it and it has a huge zoom range, but the tiny sensor left something to be desired when some of the images are enlarged.

As others have said, I need a viewfinder, and now my all-day walk around is a Canon SL1 with an 18-135 STM & 10-22 lens. Very light but maybe too bulky for some who want a smaller body.

Also, as said, if I'm driving around and stopping to shoot or for short walks, I use 6D + 24-105 or 17-40 and if I need tele, 7D + 100-400. This is for driving around.

If I may, I"d like to add my take on this,,

There's been some great replies, but,,,,,,,,

I have had the heavy bag of DSLR (Nikon) gear but sold and moved away from that years ago, my view only, but I got fed up with carrying around lots of gear,, lens changing etc., etc.,,

Now I carry, just two small compacts, both Panasonic, a LX5 for 90% of my shots, its the focal range I use most ( 24 -90mm), has a lovely sharp lens, feels right in my hand, should I need that bit of extra zoom length (not that often), I have the TZ25/ZS15. Along with spare batts, circ pol filters, cleaning cloth & brush all this fits into my old and small Lowepro shoulder bag.

For my wants & style of photography, these suit my needs perfectly. I'm not into printing large photos to hang on walls etc., not into pixel peeping,, my photos are purely for memories for my family and I. This is, as I've said before, purely my views and take on this. But it has brought that one thing back into my photography that was missing for quite a while,, FUN.

Roland.
