I am thinking of buying a DSLR and am on a budget of about 1000$ give or take a few hundred.

I like portraits, street photography and night photography. Also, live in a city with a harsh, long winter where the sunset comes early so I need something that's good in low light.

I was considering maybe buying a cheaper Nikon D5200 with a standard lens and a 35mm f1.8. Is there any other models or systems that I should look at and consider at around this price range?

any advice would be helpful, thank you.

did you also look at cameras like the Fujifilm ? smaller then the dslr and great iq

i think that for street is best small cameras system, they have all good sensors now, important is how many lenses system has, olympus is quite interesting like omd em-10, maybe this will help you:

about different cameras from Ming Thein(scroll down):

for shooting sports or fast moving objects is best DSLR for now(except olympus em-1)

hope it helps

regards

I have heard this statement a lot but I am not sure I agree ;) I shot mainly street and I used to have several olympus mirroless body. They are great camera but I choose to try D610 and I think, with a fast prime like 35 or 50mm, it is a little bit more suited for street. Indeed for me AF is a key point to nail great street moment and usualy subject are moving so DSLR will offer superior value. A fulframe sensor is also an improvement for low light street shooting as much as more subject isolation for candid street portrait.

Regarding size, I realized surprisingly that people are less reluctant to be phtographed by a big DSLR (maybe they assume I am some kind of pro or artist...) than by I small mirrorless (I must fall then in the box "annoying tourist") but it may be specific to my location. Moreover I like the OVF and I prefer to be noticed and to intereact with the subject when I shoot street. So I dont care for discretion, but this is purely personnal.

But for 1k$ a used FF DLSR like D700 or 5D with second hand 50 and 35mm will be a very good value for a street photographer imo.

For a whole day of street photography I really do not lick to lug around a full frame camera like a Canon or Nikon. Did this for years and I did not like it. For my self I finally sold the Canon 5D3 and 5D2 and wens smaller. For my self I use Fujifilm X camera like the Fujifilm X T1 , Fujifilm X100T and Fujifilm X Pro1.

The X100T and X Pro1 both have a OVF. Almost never used it but the have it ;-) Really like the big EVF of the X T1. The AF of the X T1 and X100T are fast enough for street and for my self even for sports I use the X T1. And low light I have no problems. My shoulders are now very happy campers with the much lighter set. Read more here My switch from Full Frame to Fujifilm X http://blog.wagner-fotografie.nl/the-best-camera/

The best camera is the one you use. So pick the camera you lick to use. :D

Totally! I dont mind carry aound my D610, I allways pick it up when I go out but I understand people who wont. However one flaw of dslr are strap, once you have a longer sling strap like Optech one it is totaly a different experience. I will recomend a try to every body before jumping of the DSLR ship.

I tried several straps but the weight was the biggest problem. The cameras I used where not only heavy also the lenses. So for me I see no need to look back to a dslr. The Canon EOS 5D Mark III + 24-70 II was for me to heavy. And when I had a shoot I did bring 2 FF systems. Was not fun any more. And a nice thing is that 98% do not see the difference between the old FF photos and the photos with the Fujifilm X system.

It is not the strap it is also the weight than you lug around in your bag.

Yes, personnaly for street I stay with prime (35 or 50) and only take one lens when I go out. I dont even own a zoom lens because I learnt photo with rangefinder and never found the need to buy one. But if you prefer using constant aperture zoom, FF is very fast becoming too heavy, that is why I think that big DSLR are not for everybody.

And of course thFujiX or even µ43 have more than enough image quality for street or portrait. I just keep my DSLR for the speed and endurance so I dont have to bring spare battery or worry about the AF. I like also the extra DOF control but its more a "detail". A good compromise could be also a compact APSC dslr like pentax K series ou D7100.

Large depth of field from a smaller sensor is an advantage in street photography, I guess.

In the end, p&s and mirrorless camera people will justify their choice, and dslr people will justify their choice. If you are comfortable shooting it, it's right. Having said that, when I previously used a 5D on the streets of NYC, people often looked at me like I was pointing a gun in their face.

To the OP: Your D5200 + kit + 35 f1.8 makes sense, if you want a DX or FX DSLR for street/night/portrait purposes. You might could buy a D3200 or D3300 body, the 2 lenses you mention, and might still be able to add in another used AF high-speed or new MF high-speed lens on your budget.

Personally, I prefer small for street/night, so m43. I have Oly EPL-1 body but any EP/L/M-x body would do and they are available Used very cheap. Less expensive high speed lenses include 20mm f1.7 Panny (my favorite), 14mm f2.5 Panny, 45mm f1.8 Oly but there are now a number of more expensive high speed primes. The 45 is also stunning for portraits.

The 20mm panny is very high bang for bucks but the poor AF speed made me miss lots of shot in street.

Also to my taste I fiound the 40mm FOV quiet "tricky". It is too large and too narrow at the same time. I prefer a 50 and a 35mm. But it is indeed a good choice for street photo of not-mobile object.

ISO performace is just so poor on m43.
