does a 64gb sdxc card have to be formatted as exfat for RX10 or is NTFS ok?

Hi, ive just got a new 64gb sandisk extreme pro sdxc card for my rx10, i am having trouble formatting it as exfat on my laptop, it keeps telling me it cant complete, but i can format it as ntfs.

i know there is a new v2 fw for the rx 10 that gives better video and only works on high speed sdxc cards, but does the card have to be formatted as exfat or is ntfs ok?

any benefits either way?

I suggest, you format it in camera...

Why are you trying to format it on your laptop? Makes no sense. As the earlier poster said, you can format it in your camera. But, if it is a new SDXC card, formatting is not necessary for first use.

Hi, Don't format it in your computer. Format the card in your camera. You'll also have less problems if you format the card in the camera after you download the photos. People also report they have problems if they delete photos in the camera. I haven't experiences this, but be aware that if you heavily edit photos in the camera, you may have to go to the menu and choose rebuild database (whatever it's called).

Formatting in the camera assures it will be readable by the camera and sets up the default directories the camera expects to be there.

Does this help?

No camera I have ever heard of supports NTFS. And NTFS is a logging file system so its performance on SD cards would be poor compared to EXFAT.

Follow the advice of all the other posters and format the card in the camera.

Yeah I guess I would be best just formatting in camera as you say, I will just have to live with the fact I can't open the card in my laptop afterwards, I guess I can always just transfer pics direct from camera anyway

Hi,

just a word of caution. I'm not sure about this but I'm under the impression I've read somewhere that there may exist a compatibilty issue of recent SDXC cards and previous generation SD-card readers (external and internal). As far as I remember those older readers may inform the card as not readable or not formatted, prompting the user to format them. However this shouldn't be done because it would eliminate something specific about the XC format which is essential for the new video mode of the RX10 introduced my the FW update.

I have a 64GB SDXC card which I regularly format in my a6000. My PC, bought in early 2012, has no problem reading this card.

Interesting and would be good if this is correct in my case, i may try a new reader and see if that works, if not maybe just return it, worth a try to see.

i have tried formatting the card as ntfs in my current reader just to test, so i hope i havn't damaged it.

when i load it in the camera it seems fine and formats in it though, i also do have the higher video optoin which is selectable with this card in, wasn't with my older 16gb sdhc card.

As mentioned, I'm not sure about the facts so it may be very well an updating issue only for the computer's OS (driver). But also may depend on the OS' version and/or whether the reader is supported.

But the point was that IF the reader reports a SDXC card as unreadable / unformatted, trying to format it on such a reader may cause an issue of the XC funcionality.

Hi,

well, as far as I remember the catch with the potentially "wrong" formatting was not that the card gets unusable but that it would work like SDHC only. It should be easy to test the card by switching your RX10 to video in the new XAVCD format. With SDHC you would get a message that it's unable to record video in this format with the inserted media.

You really should format cards in the camera...I think you should go ahead and do that. Then get a new card reader..they are very cheap. Older ones don't read higher capacity cards......

For your info my 64gb card formatted in cam is exfat and works fine...

What OS does the laptop have? XP needs a special update to work with exFAT.

It's win 7 64 bit

Make sure you have the latest update for windows 7. Then try downloading directly from the camera.

I'm not sure why this thread is getting so long. It's simple. A card should always be formatted in the camera in which it is to be used (although I do often switch my SDXC cards between my RX10 and RX100M3 and my SDHC cards between other cameras without formatting) and SDXC cards come pre-formatted with exFAT. The computer shouldn't even be involved.

That is silly. Format the card in the camera and you'll still be able to view it on your laptop.

End. Thread.

Yeah I can do that via the cable, I just wanted to also be able to then insert the card into my reader if I ever wanted to access it on my laptop

That's what everyone does. Try a different card reader. I don't think that I've ever connected a camera to a computer.
