you'll need to stop it down to 5.6 of f8 to get decent results. I'm getting the 24mm f2.8 ..It's supposed to be a better lens .. Canon's MTFs curves said so.. We'll see.

i understand that 28mm 2.8 is not very sharp wide open, but it's just not focusing properly! :(

i am hoping that 24mm 2.8 will give better results wide open, though it's only supposed to be marginally sharper than the 28mm 2.8.
Thanks!

Here's an example from my EF 28 f2.8 at full aperture, AFd central spot by my 10D. Doesn't seem too bad but there's some fuzziness on the RHS.
It's full width, and cropped only in the vertical direction.
I focused on the road bridge in the centre far distance.
After tweaking Levels, I applied USM in PS: 250%, 0.3, 0.

At f2.8, daylight? I seriously doubt so.

This picture clearly shows the result of camera shake.

I do use the 24mm f2.8 and so far no problems. Would be glad to let you have a sample -- an email address I should send to? Just realized I don't have any pics on the web using my 24mm.

Sorry about the camera shake. I don't normally use a tripod for shots taken at 1/3000 sec.

Mishkin2 reported two 24-70 L f2.8 lenses that were not sharp at full open. I tested mine and found the same. By f5.6, it was ok. I had a friend test his. It was better than mine but still not that sharp. For my tests, I did side by side tests of the 24-70 and the 70-200 L f2.8 IS. Both were at f2.8 and 70mm. The longer lens significantly outperformed the shorter lens. It would seem that the 24-70 lens is not all that it is cracked up to be. My 16-35 L f2.8 lens also outperforms the 24-70. I am a bit disappointed but since I very seldom shoot below f5.6, it doesn't make much difference for me. Leon

Styphatal, Have you done any full open, full zoom shots at something at a distance in good light? The reason is that the reason that I had not seen the softness at f2.8 is that I just don't normally shoot there unless I am pretty desperate. Normally, I would not worry about f2.8 shots but focussing is done full open and softness problems there have focussing implications. Leon

Thanks. glad to hear that it's working well. It would be nice if you can send me some samples at [email protected], but please don't blow my accounts, 100% crops will be enough. Thanks again!

Come to think of it, I have never taken a long distance shot at f2.8, cos if I were doing that, I tend to choose the higher f-stops (f8 or more) for better d.o.f. I have, as far as I can remember, always shot using f2.8 for close-ups. So sorry I ain't much help here...

Oh, BTW, my 24mm is a prime lens, so no zoom...:->

You can have a look at one photo taken using a Tokina 28-80 f2.8 lens shot at f2.8. The photo is cropped but otherwise no other PS was done, not even USM.

thanks man, i appreciate that

i couldn't wait and tried on a 24mm 2.8 at a local store. i figured that it wasn't any better than my 28mm 2.8. i think i am keeping my 28mm, which is quite a bit cheaper. i also got a chance to try on a 20mm 2.8, it was better than both 24mm and 28mm.
