Hi Babe,

First place, let me say I like this shot !

Second, about the faked high key ... I think that it works however I guess that high key shots are not so bright white overall - it should be "almost" white and with some subtle shadows on transition from subject to background ... just my thoughts (5% reliable :-) ...

Regards,

This is not me being a jerk, its an honest question.

What do you guys in North America class as high key?. I keep seeing what are labelled as High Key pics posted in here but to me they are simply photographs on a white background.

it may be due to resizing, but I detect a bit of "bleed" into the high key about your model's head

actually there is slight differences in the use of the term
hight key ...

1. White background (snow white) and subject in good exposure

2. White background and subject with very soft, light edges almost
overexposed with little shadow .. thats more the original meaning

It's just easier to use high key than wihite background pic :))

Anyway .. Babe .. a bit too much undefined shadow in the face
from lack of light ..

have a look here

Michael,

You happened to pick it up perfectly correct. High Key is white
background.

Happy Shooting,

but not high key for me ..
High key is still white bg .. + maybe some overexposure
in the subject ... yours is not high key in my terms but
interesting effect nevertheless...

thanks for the definition. I had another go at it and raised the exposure with curves in PS:

vs my previous example

and even a bit more would be ok ..
try the following .. take the colour pic
change it to cmyk .. go to curves
select the black and bring it down to 0
in the skin tones .. use the colour picker to
measure .. C=10 M=30 Y=30 K=0 in the
lighter portions of the skin .. not in the shadows
but even in the shadow areas the skin should not
have K

then convert it to B&W using either channel mixer

just an idea .. give it a try .. :))

Dont worry about hot spots .. blown highlights
they are not tabu .. just important to use them right

I am not a high key people expert .. but will do
some test shots myself in a few days ..
