I am referring to the color noise that usually presents itself in image files shot at high ASA (800-and up). What is the best way to get rid of such artifacts using common software like Photoshop?

http://www.neatimage.com/

Cheap, effective, both a Photoshop plugin & a standalone app.
In one word : great.

And btw, it runs fine under Wine with Linux & FreeBSD ;-)

Noel Carboni sells a very useful (and inexpensive) Photoshop action for this, and can be found at: http://home.att.net/~ncarboni/PhotoshopActionsForSale.html

I agree - I got those actions and they really work well. I was surprised at how well for the price actually. For luminance noise they seem to lessen the visual effect of the noise somehow, smoothing out the image while retaining the actual details, texture, and shading. I wrote a message about how these actions worked on my D30 images a few days ago...

Thanks a lot.I will definitely investigate these options.I have a newly purchased Canon 10D,and would like to use available light as source as much as possible. In other words, will need all the ISO/ASA I can get, hopefully with the end result being files without too much color noise.

Neat Image has the absolute best control over any image. Noel's action are targeted more toward the 10D but do a decent job as well but with less control. The new NI plugin is a must have for any Photoshop toolbox.
These tutorials I did will give you some insight into NI's various uses:

There is a simple technique in Photoshop that I have used, which seems to works pretty well. Convert the file to Lab mode, and perform a Gaussian Blur on the "a" and "b" channels. You can experiment to find the lowest blur setting that removes most of the noise--I usually start around 1 pixel. The basis of this technique is that the Luminance channel is unaffected by blurring and so it preserves the detail in the image, while the blurring affects only color thus reducing the noise. (You can also use Lab mode to good effect with Unsharp Mask--sharpen only the Luminance channel to avoid introducing any color artifacts into the sharpening process.)

Has anyone tried NikMultimedia's Define? It does the same thing as the others. But it seems the solution to the issue will cost between $10-$100 depending on what software you want.

Micheal,

I tried it and wasn't impressed as it mirrors their other program paradigms. Overpriced for what it does and also they want you to fork out another $40 for a 'custom' camera profile. How can a generic profile be custom??

They do offer color noise removal as separate from luminance noise, and I found that important. I know with my images just removing the color noise makes the whole thing look better without losing any detail to speak of.

Convert your file in photoshop to Lab Colour. Go to channels with all chanels visible, highlight layer A. Apply gausian blur (about 7 ) usually does the trick. Apply the same to channel B. This only effects the colour layers. The only draw back is that it desaturates the image slightly but can be corrected by applying curves. This method works a treat without effecting Sharpness. After you have removed the noise, re convert you file to RGB again.

Thanks

Simon.

Simon that work very nicely. I use a Fuji S2 and recently shot an event at very low light at asa 1600. Noise was apparent even though I had sharpening turned off. I sharpened it with Nik and then reduced the noise using your technique and it worked well.

Ken,

I am on a MAC os X machine. NeatImage does not work on a mac but it will soon. I am curious what Fred Mirandas action will do compared to neatimage. For $14.50 it might be worht a try.

There's an even less expensive set of actions that give you some other functions as well... http://ncarboni.home.att.net/PhotoshopActionsForSale.html

I like the way they don't make my D30 images look really overprocessed like the NeatImage demo I tried.
