I want to buy a tripod for my G2. Is there any special requirment for the tripod? I checked the B&H website, is any tripod in the website suitable for my G2? And any suggestion?
Thank you very much.

Buy a Bogen Manfroto 3001, it should be around $80. You add a head for about $30-$40 and you have something pretty sturdy.

Well, depends on your height.

Velbon has maximum height 155 cm,
Bogen Manfroto has 180 cm...

Bogen is considered the sturdier among the non-over-the-top-expensive tripods as
Gitzo.

The weight of the Velbon maxi 347GB is 2.6 lb (1.2kg), including head.

If you want to look at Manfrotto alternatives, look rather at their new Digi Tripod series (i.e. 728b weight: 4lb). there's no leg brace. I'd prefer to have them for stability.

The Manfrotto are black rather than the silver of the Velbon that can reflect on close-up photos. The cetre column is reversible. I do not see any other advantage, but then I am no expert.

The problem is that I think it is a little heavy (4 pounds) for I have planned to take it to climbing this summer. But for light ones, I am afraid of my camera.

Well, you have to decide between a tripod being heavier and being useful.

You can find 1.5 lb tripods, but they are not so useful, Canon G2 is heavier that others. Buy a Canon S400 or anyn smaller digital camera and then you can easily use a 1 lb tripod. But for a G2 it won't be effective and the pictures will not be sharp...

I am buying the Velbon myself for the same reason (to take on hikes). I am a little worried about the stability in a breeze, because of the light weight, but I figure that I can always weigh it down by attaching the camera bag or some plastic bag to the leg braces, perhaps loaded with a rock, or hold the centre column down myself.

i have to acnowledge that I took my
Bogen 3001 twice in hikes and it was pretty rough with 5 extra pounds. :)))

So yes, for hikes lighter tripods are better, but there should be some
ratio between the lightness of the tripod and the actual conditions (wind,
water, weight of camera).

Happy shooting and enjoy your hikes!!

Besides hiking, what do you want to shoot? How about prioritizing needs, is hiking your biggest priority? What's your budget? (If price is less of an impediment, the carbon fiber 'pods may be just the ticket for hiking, etc.) Is color an issue - black or matte for non-reflecivitiy? Ball head versus pan tilt? Are you tall? Do you need to get really close to the ground? Do you expect to use it a lot or will this be casual - that can make a difference in deciding if you'd risk a consumer grade 'pod or need a much better one, etc.

You just need a stable tripod around 150 cm max height convenient to carry with you.

Try search for "slik" at B&H and check U-series (stable tripods even in windy weather, prices starting from 27USD).
Check for specifications at: http://www.slik.com/u/index-e.html
