In the near future, such as three months to a year. Will Pentax be releasing an upgraded version of the Optio S?

You see, I would very much like to buy one right this minute, but am afraif that a newer one will come out very soon. As was the case when I bought the Canon Powershot G3. The G5 suddenly comes out of nowwhere.

Maybe nobody knows anything that can help, but if you do, It would help me. Thanks.

And also if you have any encoureagment for me to buy this camera, then please give it to me.
Thanks.

The optio s has only been out for 2 months. Of course they will update and improve it. All technology will become obsolete.
BUT...

The optio S is the worst camera you can buy. Look at the sample images here or from other users. It is the noisiest CCD, and horrible lens combination. I was happy as could be to get this camera, selling my s200 to finance it. Sadly, it takes worse pictures than the decent or above average s200. I would say there is a serious glitch in the optio s programming, or they are lying about the 3MP resolution. There is so much noise and interference in every image I've taken. Purple fringing, bad exposure outdoors, not great indoors either, hard to use joystick (you get used to it though, but the image quality is horrible. DPREVIEW IS BEING PAID BY PENTAX TO GIVE SUCH A GOOD REVIEW. I love this site but I feel extremely let down because of the obviously faulty review. The images are horrible. I can't say anymore but I want to.

DO NOT EVER BUY AN OPTIO S

Sales are high on the sub-compact digital cameras. I expect to see several more versions of the Optio S, like Canon has done with their S series. The first sign will be rebates around Christmas and then the new model in 2004. I hope for a 4MP, 4X Zoom, faster lens, stronger flash, and full manual controls. The only question is what brand will it be (Nikon, Canon, Pentax?) If someone can get the Canon S quality in the Optio S case with some of the improvements I listed, I'll buy one.

But waiting for someone to make that perfect camera is not an option for me. That must be why I have all of these old cameras around the house?

Why don't you just return the camera?

Everybody has the right to be critical about a camera and the photos taken by the user. But, what right do you have to make charges against dpreview? Do you have evidence of this act?

I see that you have been a member for about 8 minutes. Usually not enough time to say you "love this site". But your member name sums it all up.

Please someone! Is what Optio Hater is saying true?? I was actually planning on buying this camera within the week. I have seen many nice sample images from this camera.
Many people seem to have mixed feelings about things.

Am sure it will be replaced a year or so down the road with an "improved" version. Isn't that the nature of all digicams? Don't worry about it. I am into mine for about 1400 pics now and I don't have any complaints. I would buy another.

btw.... Dpreview was not the only site that had good things to say about the Optio S. Others did also....

Yes, I believe I will definately buy this camera in the next two weeks or so.!! I think I will be happy!

Yes Canon pictures are better, more detailled, less noisy when viewed at 100%. But the optio s is enough to take nice pictures and print photo quality pictures ...

Dan,

You simply have a bad camera. Your tirade expresses your experience but in no way expresses any valuable information about the Optio S. Your experience and the experience of thousands of other satisfied Optio S owners differs markedly.

Why don't you just return your camera for an exchange or refund rather than making these unfounded, broad and general statements which have no validity outside your own personal experience?

I have had mine a bit over a week. So far I am very satisfied with the camera. While the pictures don't compare to my Canon 10D, the results are just fine. The camera is fun to use, very easy to carry around, and
has a lot of features for such a small camera.

While there will always be newer and improved cameras, the question is

whether the camera out now suits your needs. If you are looking for a small digital, go with the Optio S.

BTW- J & R offers a case and 2 year extended warranty for about
$25.00. This gives the camera a full three year warranty. This was

too good of a deal to pass up. I know that for the next three years the camera will be covered if anything goes wrong.

... but I don't even have the Otio S yet. I will be buying one in the next few weeks. I think you mixed up posts. It was that raving Optio Hater. I am wondering if anything he said is true though.

I think as a case I am going to either use an emtpy altoids case and drill a small hole in the side for the strap. Or carry it around In a deck of cards. Or both.

I am located in Canada and am going to buy this camera most likely from Future Shop. It costs a hefty $600 Canadian.

Hi Dan, I bought mine from future shop and they will price match. See camera canada

http://www.cameracanada.com/eNet-cart/Default.asp?cat=CAMPS&type=1&mkt=&brand=Pentax

$565 plus $10 shipping. Don't know if blacks price matches or not, but they have a relatively inexpensive extended warranty if you are into that.

Watch future shop as you may get an opened box if you are not paying attention. A new optio should have its serial # on the top of the box, and the initial setup screen should come on when you start it up. If you go the open box route you get a discount, but you may get a slightly less than optimum camera as well. Ok if you have more time than money as you may have to bounce it back.

By the way some of the optio s's are defective. I noticed most problems at wide angle. That said there is a lot of technology fit in a very small camera so the margin of error is quite small I imagine. I had not used mine for a few days and when I picked it up, I was amazed again by its size.

Enjoy

I see the problem not, I was responding to optio hater's thread, but I addressed it to you - problem was picking up your name from his thread. Definitely the post was intended for optio hater.

He may indeed have a bad camera, but to make gigantic leaps of assumptions about Phil's relationship with Pentax or any other camera manufacturer is both unwarranted and just plain dumb...

I apologize for the confusion....

If you would like to see samples from the Optio S let me know and I'll be glad to post links...

Well from what i could read on the differents sites and according to the reviews I could see in french magazines, the Optio S doesn't seem to be a bad model.

Though, some commentaries seem to be the reflect of a general feeling.

The images are a little bit soft especially in the corners, the flash is really weak and there's a little bit of distorsion at wide angle. From my own feeling, I would say it's a really good carry everywhere camera to take pictures that don't need high specifications (the slowest shutter speed is not sufficiant in my own opinion to get good pictures at night for instance).

But compared to a Dimage Xt or a Canon Ixus V3 or 400 (S200 and S400 for USA I think), the picture's quality is obviously worse. Reffering to the samples you can see here or there, I think Optio S is enough to be a "photo-recorder" just as it can exist for audio. It will be enough to print A4 pictures but I wouldn't buy it as a first camera to take well built pictures.

Actually, I think an Optio S can be a nice complement of an argentic reflex.....expecting numeric reflex at low fares.

I'm at the moment wondering if I must or not buy this camera that comes at 400 euros in France.

PS: forgive my poor english. I may have written horrors...
But waiting for someone to make that perfect camera is not an
option for me. That must be why I have all of these old cameras
around the house?

DanyaL,

I got my OptioS from FutureShop about 3 weeks ago. I went in and asked for the camera, which was $599 CDN. Then I picked up a 128 SD card fro $99. The salesman asked me if I want 3 year FutureShop warranty fro $119. I thought about it and said "no". He asked "why", and I said "too expensive". So he offered me the 128 SD card for half price and a $30 gift card if I take the warranty. I figure it was a good deal so I took it. Keep this in mind. Came out to $915 after taxes.
(If you want I can even tell you which store, Mississauga)

Not sure if they still offer it, but I heard they also have 2 types of warranties, one that will cover sending it out to be serviced, the other that will provide an over the counter exchange for same or something w comparable features. No idea of price.
