Hello everyone,

Until now I have been tethering my D800 to a laptop using a USB cable and Lightroom. I take a picture with the camera, wait for it to show on the laptop, review it and adjust settings or composition as necessary. So far, this has worked fine for macros and landscape.

Now I am in the need of a different workflow. I need take a picture and review it myself on camera intermediately after taking it and have an assistant double check it on the laptop. The assistant will be looking for details that I might miss on the spot but it can be delayed several seconds. I will keep shooting and images should get buffered while they get tethered.

The problem that I am facing is that all software that I have tried, either:

1. Downloads all files to the PC, not leaving a copy on the camera (scary). I cannot review them on the camera.

2. Leaves a copy on the camera, but the preview button is disabled. Photos can only be reviewed on the PC, not on the camera.

I have reviewed all setting on the camera and configuration options on software like Lightroom, Control My Nikon, Capture One 8, digiCamControl. Same is happening on an Android tablet using Helicon Remote and DslrDashboard.

Any ideas or suggestions are very welcome.

Regards!

In case of digiCamControl: advanced properties (small arrow near the exposure ) and set the application mode to on, in this way you can us the preview button on camera

Duka,
Thanks, that did it. It is not a perfect solution since the preview on the camera is unavailable until files are downloaded to the PC, but after that I can preview on both places (Camera and PC). Probably a limitation on the D800.

Thanks!

I am now using qdslrdashboard with a tp-link 3040 router which gives me wireless tethering to my iPad or windows PC. You can use it remotely or in studio mode where you wanter around with the camera - much easier with it being wireless :) - and the file is transferred to the iPad or pc, leaving a copy on the memory card.

the software costs $10 and the router is around $30. The firmware to flash the route is free.

I am using it on d800e and d7000, works perfectly :)

edit - here is the link for the software and details http://dslrdashboard.info/downloads/

Thank you for the information, it works awesome.

Downloading the RAW files takes forever so I changed my settings to:
  • Image quality: RAW+JPEG basic
  • Image size: Small
  • JPEG compression: Size priority
With these settings I am able to transfer and preview images on the D800 with in a second and the quality on the iPad/Nexus 7 is good enough for review.
