I disagree, the SD100 is much smaller and is more advanced. Just bought one and I'm very pleased by its performance.

And this is the smallest Canon digicam ever, so slim it easily fits into my pocket. The S230 is much thicker. In this arena, every millimeter counts.

so let's try to guess when the SD100 is going to hit the US market. I've been waiting for two months now, since canon's initial announcement in May,03.

What do you think guys? From a marketing point of view, It seems to me that they're waiting for their S230s already out there to be sold... Who would buy the S230 if there is a similar 3.2MP canon camera for the same price.....unless the S230's price drop by $100 at least!

This coming 4th of July holiday? Let's hope so.

The problem is that the picture quality of the SD100 is clearly inferior to the S230's. If Canon was able to keep exactly the same picture quality, then I would recommend the SD100.

In what ways are the SD100 pictures inferior to the S230? I read from numerous websites that the two cameras were essentially the same, with the only difference being the size and memory format..

I originally ordered the S400, however, the SD100 was released the next day and I wanted a camera that was compatible with SD cards- however, it's been over 2 months and Amazon has not even acknowledged that the camera is released. Does anybody know when it will be released and whether I should just purchase an Optio S or Z3 instead? Thank you for your feedback.

Look at the review in this very forum: the camera has more "blur" in the end points/edges of the photo area, more blooming, more chromatic aberrations and color shifting.

While the S230 has its share of chromatic aberrations and some blooking it's nowhere to the level of this camera, and I have not seen color shifting with the S230.

That is certainly what it reads on paper. But paper specs and real world performance can be different things.

How can you compare the sd100 and s230 if the latter was not even reviewed on this site?

I don't think comparing different sites' reviews if fair: just pick one camera and look at the sample pictures of different reviews.
Or do you own an s230?

Hey,

I was looking for a small camera that still had good video qualities. At first I was looking at the Canon Elph series cuz one of my friends has the S200, but I was always annoyed by the 15 second limit. I was hoping the SD100 fixed that problem, but it doesn't sound like it. In light of this, would I be better off going with one of the Sony DSC-P cameras?

Take a look at the "Conclusion" page of the reviews for the S400 and SD100. Based on the pros/cons listed there, I'm not sure why the S400 is Highly Recommended and the SD100 is just above average? Don't mean that as an attack on Phil, just a genuine question.

I'm looking for an ultra-compact, I think video would be a very nice feature, and I think 640x480 video is a mnimum.

Given the SD100 and S400 seem very similar from the Conclusion page, and the SD100 has the video I want, does that make it a Highly Recommended for me?

The whole point is to not just read the conclusion. If 640x480 video is of utmost importance to you, you can simply eliminate all cameras that don't have it). For the rest of us the review makes sense when image quality is primary.

SD100:

Good resolution, about as much as we could expect from an ultra-compact three megapixel

S400:
Excellent resolution, best of the ultra-compact four megapixel class.

SD100:

the SD100 is a compromise, the lens suffers from softness at maximum aperture ('wide open' - which it is likely to be in most medium and low light situations) and also exhibited chromatic aberrations. We also experienced color shift in overexposed reds and the camera's macro performance wasn't fantastic.

SD400:

The PowerShot S400 is a stylish ultra-compact, it follows in the tradition of previous ultra-compact PowerShots in being functional, of very good build quality and producing excellent images.

The SD100 is definitely your camera: in 320x240 it can record 3 minutes(!)of video with sound, and in 640x480 the limit is 30 seconds. Even the 320x240 resolution is good enough ( VHS) for most home video applications, and 3 minutes is a VERY long time considering the usual length of the funny/interesting moments.

Any idea when this camera (SD100) will be released in the US? It's not much of an option right now if it isn't even available!

I compare them because I know the kind of pictures the S230 can do (I have it) and I am seeing what the SD100 is doing. After you use a camera a lot in different situations, you can get a good feel how the camera will respond even if you dont' have the exact shot, within reason.

Even Canon's own company shots show this difference in quality.

BTW, I would like to know in what way(s?) is the SD100 more advanced over the S230. We have size and the memory card.. and that's it I think.

The S230 and SD100 have the capability to record 3 minutes in 160x120, and 320x240 with the appropriate memory card (i.e. yo have enough space and it's not dead slow). you can also record 30 secs 640x480. All of these at 15 fps.
