Should have added k5 in excellent condition second hand 6000 shutter count with 18-55 and 55-200 wrs £350 (no sellers worries) or new k50 red for same price or own colour £400

The K5 is a great camera but I'd go for the K50 since it adds focus peaking and perhaps some of the improved AF capabilities from the K5IIs (but maybe not since I never owned either K5IIs or K50). Maybe K50 owners could add.

One for k50.which I'm edging to but more opinions please

I would lean towards the K-50. Newer product, hence more likely to be patched via firmware updates and for a longer period; better video support. Higher ISO, though this may be irrelevant in real terms.

Thanks,

Jawa

I would go for k5. It is a pro soli body. Has the best dynamic range. .a very quiet shutter. Also higher shutter life. Top lcd.

pentaxian .

I can't speak for the Top but have owned a My and it's a great camera. Solid and pro quality. The top screen is very useful. I've since upgraded to the K5ii

This is a hard choice lol

I had the K-5 (now the K-5IIs) and have now the K-50 as well.

I would go for the K-5. I know it doesn't have the focus peaking but the K-5 has it's advantages.

The top LCD is one thing that I love very much, much quieter shutter, and just the feel of it...and it's a semi-pro camera.

As far as performance I always believe that we tend to miss shots because of user errors more than camera's lack of features.

Good luck with your choice!

Ben

Hiking travelling - k50 otherwise k5? maybe - tough choice, image quality is excellent on both.

It is a tough choice Dean...I am glad I got both! :-)

The K5 was, for a short time, the Pentax flag-ship model; the K50 has always been 'Second Division'.

That said, the K50 is newer with some enhancements over the K5, but also some down-grading, i.e. no top LCD, which you may or may not want or notice if you haven't had a camera with one.

The K50 will hold your hand more with your photography, (assuming you are new to DSLR's?), but IMO the K5 is more versatile and will help you grow and explore more.

The K5 comes with two kit lenses that will hold you in good stead for a while; you'll have to buy lenses to use the K50. The two kit lenses, however, are at best 'ok' for IQ.

Price wise you're getting a better package with the K5, and it's cheaper than the body only K50.

On balance, I'd go the K5 route and maybe use the money saved as the basis of the fund for your next lens. I personally treat camera bodies as consumables - they lose value relatively quickly and have little residual value after a few years; lenses are more of a long term investment, although don't expect to make money from them, just not lose as much!

Whichever decision you'll make you'll be happy with the camera. After all, they're both Pentax :).

Hi Pete,

I use a K-30 now but I will get the K5 for the following rationale:

The only real advantage of the K-30/K-50 over the K5 to me is focus peaking. But since my DA 18-135 has quick-shift focus, I find myself using this focus peaking less than 5% of my usage.

On the other hand, K5 has much quieter shutter, feels better in my hand, has top LCD and more features than K-30. As far as appearances go, I think K5 looks better K-30 which is nicer than K-50.

YMMV though.

The K-5 was actually the Pentax flagship for an almost inordinately LONG time. I say ALMOST inordinately long because it was in fact the best APS-C camera from any maker for essentially its full run, including the K-5ii update. K-5/ii/iis held their own very well until the very nice replacement K-3 could be developed.

The deals are just as fantastic for the K-3 right now, given the added capabilities.

+1 There have been good deals on the K3 all along. Last winter I got a free battery grip, DA 50mm f/1.8 and 32 gig SD card thrown in when I pounced on that deal.

That was a great deal, and had I not been my usual first-adopter self with the K-3, I would have grabbed that myself.

I agree, when I made this decision, I went for the K50 because of focus peaking - invaluable feature for using manual focus. The autofocus, is probably a bit better. The video codecs are more compact. It has an awful lot for a camera that you can get a new warranty on for 3 years (extra $20 at B&H), for about $350.00 US.

Is the k5ii a big improvement it's not that much more here ?

K5II improves AF, the LCD and probably some more items verses the K5.

K5II has a quieter shutter, more pro-grade build probably will AF in lower light compared to the K50.

Dean can give more details but most will agree K5II is an improvement over either camera.

I think the K50 will add focus peaking though, which I thought I wouldn't care much about but I've found it very useful.

Cheers.
